I don't mind auto pokes. Without them, I think it would be pretty tough to get a quick, accurate, poke off. It's fine when you're using DSS, but would be more challenging than necessary for those quick jabs at the puck since you can't really aim it in advance. Plus, this is a pretty basic move for a pro hockey player. Which, all the players in the game are and the idea is to replicate the real-world sport as much as possible. I think it's pretty easy to take a tripping call if you are truly spamming it. Also, if you're getting close enough to be poked, you need to protect the puck better and keep it as out of reach of defender's sticks as possible.

If the idea is to "... replicate the real-world sport as much as possible"..
Then I suggest spam to go away.
