Frostbite is versatile, yet cumbersome. Although reports from a few years ago indicate that internal EA employees weren't huge fans of it, I think we need to expect that the engine has evolved since then.
If you spend time playing an NHL game from prior to Frostbite, and then move over to '23 - there really are some massive changes to lighting, animations, physics - if you're looking for them.
I think we need to remember that '23 wasn't given the attention it should've due to COVID. They (developers) were also still transitioning much of the tech over into Frostbite and getting acquainted with that I'm sure.
I expect a lot from '24 and the article about SAPIEN tech being introduced is exciting. I hope it's also being done for NHL, but we'll have to wait and see.
