Too bad the state of online hockey is like it is right now. Like you said, this is nothing like the hockey I’ve grown up watching… That’s why I never and will never ever play online.
But if you really love Hockey, you would play OFFLINE and having a blast 😀
I've tried all kinds of sliders and settings offline, the game is unplayable offline from a realism perspective because of the AI. The sliders help with reducing the momentum-less skating engine and the Harlem Globetrotters on ice puck control and passing, but the AI is a lost cause. You can give me your wonderful settings and I will play with them and capture clips of the AI letting me into their zone, letting me skate around their zone uncontested, and taking horrible angles at puck carriers all over the ice. This is not to mention the offensive AI, which is somehow both unfair (ping pong passing, changing directions at ungodly speeds, getting every loose puck bounce) and ineffective.

I can capture small clips all day long and I can make real NHL player look bad or look like a superstar… Even the AI in the NHL makes mistakes, lol !
Capture a full unedited period with my settings AS IS and we have a deal 😀 When I emphasize on AS IS, it’s because everyone that loves hockey is an expert when it comes to sliders, and they wanna tinker with them… But trust me, I’ve put more than 200 hours and sometimes just changing one value can put the gameplay in another direction fast 😉

Used your sliders for a period, 8-1 me:
Here are some Highlights:
This one is long with a low frame rate but I wanted to capture how bad the defense was and for how long
I could do many more of these but it would be beating a dead horse.
Its nothing against you, the sliders are fine, the AI is severely broken in this game and sliders won't fix it.

You played with the sliders and setting AS IS and on Superstar ? It was 8-1 after 1 ?
WTH !!! Maybe I’m super bad and everyone playing with my sliders are also, lol !!!
I play player lock and try to play like hockey…. Not looking for glitch goals and I’m also passing the puck…

These clips are awesome BTW, how do you make these ? It’s a gif of a video ?
And no offence, but all I see in these clips is a guy not passing, hanging on to the puck looking for glitch goals… Same thing I see when I look videos of online… If you wanna have fun, try playing player lock, not look for glitches, pass the puck and never ask for passes. Put each team on (Puck Side Attack) in the team Strategies and maybe, just maybe you'll see what I see 😉 Then post a video of a whole period 😀

One of the reasons why PernellKarl's sliders are allowing you to do that is the stark contrast in backskating speed, aggression and in general skating speeds that he has. The biggest one being the backskating speed.
I've got my sliders set up for position lock on G but I was gonna end up doing another set for skaters. The AI is improved from previous games, but it takes A LOTTTTT of tuning to get them to become challenging but not cheap.- 3 years ago

The AI is improved from previous games, but it takes A LOTTTTT of tuning to get them to become challenging but not cheap. That's fine, I will try them, but there are two main defensive AI problems that sliders can't solve:
1) They take the wrong angles towards puck carriers - they seem to target the back shoulder of the player, causing them to skate where the puck carrier WAS rather than where he IS GOING.
2) They prioritize covering open players and staying in position too much, at the expense of attacking the puck carrier. This leads to offensive zone play that looks more like an ISO play in basketball, where one player skates around with the puck (like in my clips), and if (more like when) he beats his man, no one else is concerned with stopping him.
