But I'm confused the other thread says checking doesn't work. So which is it?

Both can be true. Being able to line up a hit from 30+ feet away, while simultaneously hitting another player without the puck should result in a penalty. Either charging, or interference.
That also means checking is 'broken'.

I could have a 95 body checking attribute, get the hit bubble and miss on 50% of my checks but if I have the minimum body checking (76 I think? Been a long time since I've played) and have truculence on I can make 95% of my hits proc an animation.- CapeBretonIslndr3 years agoSeasoned Adventurer
My take on this "X Factor stuff", you know, just to keep it diplomatic, is complete fluff and enables not-so-good "gamers" to feel somewhat relevant. The hype train reeled in a certain demographic, and that's currently how this game is being played: very little skill, and exploit abusiveness. Also factor in that this game isn't where it should be, especially for the consumer cost, and you get an absolute travesty of a hockey video game.
Ultimately, zero competition equals a poor quality product.
