How do I prevent the cross-check?

So I skate up behind the guy in the zone with the puck and give him a shove to push him off it and it's a cross check. I'm not sure how to prevent this because as you can see in the clip it's just one shove. What am I doing wrong here?

Ok, but that's not what I read on here. It was my impression that spamming that move caused a penalty and I want to know if that's the case. It's not optimal to use your stick from behind.

It's more likely to happen when spammed, but low discipline can also cause it.

You have control over it. Stop doing things that can generate penalties to avoid them.

Stop using shove in any manner since there's a random chance it might generate a penalty? Why even have shove in the game then? I don't think you understand what the problem here is, either that or you're purposefully pretending not to.

Elbowing penalties are just dressed up charging penalties from what Aljo said, though he also said cross-checking wasn't random either so I don't know.

Spamming shove causes cross-checks and there's a greater chance of them with lower discipline. That's what I'm saying. Stop spamming shoves. Stop smashing players on the boards, stop charging up your hits from several strides away, etc. These aren't random acts that you have no control over. Penalties are only given out if you do something that can cause them.

You can clearly see that I didn't spam anything, I simply pressed it once. If I can do the same play 100 times and I get a penalty 5 of those times randomly then there's literally nothing I can do to stop it unless I never use that button at all.

I'd also like to add that you SHOULD stop skating from several strides away and coast into your hit because that's what makes it NOT charging...unless you jump into them at the last second, which we've already discussed.

At the core of these issues is the complete lack of knowledge of the flow of the sport of hockey. I obviously can't explain that to you but if you've played thousands of games and weekly practices from anklebiter to midget, to college then to for fun, you can feel the pulse of the game and how egregious these things really are. You'll always fall back on the "it's not meant to be a full simulation" argument but that doesn't in any way excuse core game mechanics that don't work how they would in real life.

My friends and I who still play this game spend almost as much time screaming "WHY??" then playing the actual game, that's how bad it is. Passes to nowhere, dumps that don't work, hip-checking at 0 kph, D scoring on ourselves, goalies sitting\laying down, goals called off for the wrong reasons, computer trying to pass through the net instead of using the boards, obstruction interference doesn't exist, I could go on and on and on but it doesn't matter because they'll always just be another excuse and zero accountability or will to ever change any of it.
