You'll need PS Plus as all of HUT requires an online connection.
this is not true. i play HUT mode all the time and i do NOT have PSPLUS. i even reached out to sony and they confirmed that i do not need PSPLUS to play the SINGLE PLAYER hut mode

I can't test this since I'm on Xbox and it works fine there using a guest account. I'm not sure this is possible on PlayStation though. Can you try a Play Now game outside of HUT as a test?
