What game are you playing? NHL 24? And it doesn't resemble hockey? Have some of you forgotten that VIDEOGAMES are supposed to be FUN? This obsession with a 100% simulation of every single element of the sport is going to drive some of you insane. You're NEVER going to get it.
If you want 100% hockey - then go play hockey.
You would have more fun with this game if you didn't take it so darn seriously every time a move becomes OP, you end up on the bad end of a bug/animation glitch or god forbid EA take some chances to make changes to the gameplay to freshen things up. Why not take the time to master the maneuvers in this game that are getting the best of you while EA tries to address it in a future patch, rather than just constantly beating this drum of "tHey doN'T kNow HocKeY?"
I've currently lost 5-6 games in a row in OVP, I can't seem to find my groove in WoC yet and I've had a few successful endeavours into HUT, but ultimately getting whooped by much more skilled players.
Am I getting all salty about the hip check? Am I all upset that sometimes poke checks don't do what I want? When a dump-in gets snagged by a defender with a vertical comparable to an NBA stater, do I get all "o000o00 eA DoEsn'T KnOw hOckEy"? I've seen maybe 3 Lacrosse attempts in the abundance of games I've played.. is it rustling my jimmies to the point where I need to rage post on the forums? No. Because these are things that can be addressed by bringing up the topic without the rude comments about the knowledge of the sport held by the team who develops this product.
I explicitly said I understand it is not going to be a 100% sim, especially online. People (me included) want to play shorter periods online and get someone accurate stats, it can't be completely realistic. I am totally ok with some liberties being taken with the game for that to happen. Worse goalies, less missed shots/passes/mishandled pucks, faster game speed, etc, are all fine with me.
However, the general flow of the game should be similar to a real hockey game, just with those and possibly other liberties taken.
If I could sum up the biggest issue that permeates this game, is that it is too easy for one player or team to maintain control of the puck in all areas of the ice. The game is too in control and perfect.
On an individual level, skating and puck control are way too high, every defenceman is too good at evading forecheckers with skating like an exaggerated Makar/Fox, which is why breakouts are so boring an easy. You never have to go off the glass and out, or ring the puck around the boards, or even go d-to-d very often. Does anyone even ice the puck on the penalty kill in this game? You don't really have to. Just skate it out or make a pass.
I'll admit part of this is due to the fact that we can see all players on the ice all the time, but there are solutions to this - like having severe penalties to pass accuracy (attribute dependent of course) when passing to players not in the field of view of the player without possessing the puck for a certain amount of time first. Maybe we would actually have to clear the puck on rebounds instead of firing a perfect breakout pass to a forward 2 zones away?
Every forward glides around in the corners with players bouncing off of them like an exaggerated Thornton/Jagr, this is why offensive zone possessions look more like basketball than hockey. They tried to fix this with the exhaust engine but it is gimmicky, arcadey, and inauthentic.
On a team level, passing/puck receptions are too good. This may be controversial and I can provide video evidence, but there is so little skill required as far as how long you hold the pass button and (less so) where you aim the left stick when passing. Players make insane (and physically impossible) pass receptions all the time. Again, maybe you would have to go off the glass and out or around the boards, or (gasp!) dump the puck in sometimes.
And I'm not even mentioning the AI, which is atrocious and has been for years. AI players can't get the concept of going where the puck carrier is going instead of where he was a couple of seconds ago.
