The regular hitting isn't perfect but it is more reasonable.
Something strange I noticed is a hit against the boards on a perpendicular path can cause you to bounce backwards roughly 5 feet. I've only experienced it a handful of times so far.
Since regular hitting is no longer as effective, hip checking is taking over again. That issue was never properly addressed in the first place and now the gameplay is back to square one with hip checks being the primary check being thrown.
Entire teams skating backwards with their butts in the air is ... not immersive, to put it politely.
There are legitimate complaints about the state of body checking, but I feel a lot of that stems from the overwhelming advantage given towards offensive tools.
When the only way to shut down a dangling forward playing keep away in the offensive zone is to catch them off guard with a "speed boosted" body check, removing it creates/widens the imbalance.
Now even if you are successful connecting with a check, they can shrug it off and regain the puck easily.
Reduce the ability of players to quickly regain possession after a check/poke and it will help. There is way too much "magnetism" to put the puck back on their stick immediately after they are forced to lose control.
