@bg0vzeyqov1yIf you aren't really following they are ushering in a new era of hockey. Your hockey experience might not be what you will get because they are clearly going a route for the new youngsters. The ones that have YT videos doing sick twirly move goals. The ones that do crazy celebrations. Sometimes you have to see that maybe they aren't targeting you anymore.
Me personally I love the change. Score, spotlight celebration, 5 man celebration after, replay of the goal x2. Maybe they should just focus on HUT and WoC instead of presentation that won't be appreciated.
The hyper-individualisation in our society is glaringly obvious with gaming these days.
Everything is focused on the consumer being able to do whatever they want in whatever 'universe' the game mode is based on. Further, there's an insane level of effort that is going into the user being able to 'express themselves' by way of customization, emotes, etc etc.
The changes to presentation drive this home. Sure, it's neat. Don't get me wrong. But like others have pointed out, it takes you out of the NHL broadcast experience. The camera angle is not one that's used in the real world (it would be akin to having a guy on skates who is instantly on the ice after a goal with a camera) and the lighting effects, the focus on a single player - it just doesn't fit.
But at the end of the day, it's not a huge deal.
I think much of the discontent is that whilst other major "real" sports games add celebrations, effects, bells and whistles... it is never at the expense of the core simulation experience. They never detract from a three pointer, a home run or touchdown...
This badly realized cutscene, remember your teammates are bizarrely idling whilst you're pretending to be a helicopter or whatever, is seemingly mandatory and actively ruins the immersion of the moment of what it could be like to score a goal in the real NHL.
It's disappointing that whoever is in charge of the NHL franchise has chosen to go this "Street", "Hitz" route rather than say, NBA2K's realism, depth or Eras mode.
For some, it's not a big deal... but for offline, it's a killer. I can accept the decision of the producers. They owe franchise players nothing this year; they have made no false promises.
From the full gameplay videos, it seems like a no-buy. The negatives weigh out the positives of icon passing and the audio. That's a shame, because these negatives are mostly cosmetic.
