Re: AI Defensemen Issue

@NeonSkyline21 wrote:

So I'm sure anyone who plays either Online Versus or HUT is aware of this issue but I'm not sure if the team is currently working on a fix for it. The issue is as follows:

Sometimes when the opposing team is breaking the puck out of their zone, your AI defenseman on the weak side of the ice will inexplicably pinch up towards center ice even though the play is heading towards your zone. If you don't take control of your weak side D-man before this happens, you are pretty much guaranteed to be dealing with a 2 on 1 or breakaway against your goalie.

Is this a "known issue" that is currently being worked on? I can't fathom this being an intentional design decision so if that's not the case then this is a pretty major bug IMO.

What's your neutral zone setup? Have you checked your advanced strategies page (prior to searching for a game) to adjust Trap/Forecheck ?

This will affect your a.i. tendency to step up in the neutral zone and/or fall back to a more defensive position.

Can't speak for HUT but strategies don't seem to do anything in EASHL, especially in 3v3.

@KidShowtime1867 This happens across all defensive strategies. LD in particular will pinch up against the puck carrier in the O zone, fly right past them and get caught w/ another skater— always leading to a breakaway goal.

This has happened with the most conservative settings and the best D-men in the game.

So if you run a 1-4 neutral zone trap, your LD is always stepping up? Any video of this?

@KidShowtime1867Hey what defense would you run if you had two bot AI dmen while waiting for the rest of your team to get online. Really curious and thanks for the help in advance

When it comes to World Of Chel without human defenders:

    Offensive Zone Bias: Sit-back

Forecheck: 1-2-2 Passive. This ensures if you still have a CPU winger, they don't get too deep and keeps the D-Pairing high at the blue line.

When you go up a goal or two, change this to 1-2-2 Agressive. Your strong-side D will pinch and the wingers will work to force a turnover. You'll only have 1 D back though in the event a turnover happens, so always be aware of that.

Neutral Zone: 1-2-2 Red. Your defenders will engage at the Red line. This allows your forwards time to backcheck and disrupt more passing lanes.

If you need to be agressive, change this to 1-2-2 blue, but keep in mind your D will be trying to apply pressure at the blue line, which leaves lots of acceleration time & space for your opponent should they squeak a puck by your D.

It seems like most people leave strategies as is and I think the default is 1-3-1. This is a terrible setup unless you're up a goal or two. Three players try to line up at the blue line while a D tries to apply pressure to the puck carrier navigating through the neutral zone. This is a perfect recipe for constant odd-man rushes because more often than not, your opponent is cruising through the neutral zone with speed and by the time the A.I. gets set-up, the play has already evolved.

For the D pairings, set them to Collapse and Protect Net. This ensures your D will be there for rebounds and to (hopefully) give some serious resistance to anyone trying to traverse the net-front-slot area.

Also, ensure your humans are playing positionally sound. If they're out of step and out of position, CPU D will not hesitate to jump up and take over an abandoned winger position.(Please EA, give us a slider for a.i. tendency to adjust coverage) When they do this, they're expecting the misplaced forward to cover for THEM, but more often than not - the misplaced forward neglects this responsibility and instead goes towards the net.. leaving 1 D back and alone to defend an odd-man rush.

Hey Kid I appreciate your effort to help. Just as background information, I'm one of those dudes who watch YouTube videos from all of the good HUT players to get tips on which strategies to use, etc. I've watched Sleeveless' (or whatever his name is) videos about strategies, Eki's, etc. so I feel like I'm pretty well-versed in how each of the game's strategies works with an AI team in 1v1 modes.

I say all of that to say this: this issue is seemingly completely independent of how you have your neutral zone forecheck settings set. I typically have my neutral zone forecheck set to 1-2-2 red and the bias set to hang back as opposed to push forward. My guess is that it's a logic issue with AI defensemen in which they respond to a cross-ice stretch pass by wanting to step up to hit the receiver. This doesn't affect HUMAN players (like that BIGRITCH guy was saying in that other thread), only AI. I should also mention that this "step up" isn't happening at the opposing team's blueline but rather YOUR OWN blueline (which makes it even stranger).

I think I have some clips saved so I'll try to upload them when I get home.

Obviously, this issue can be mitigated by preemptively switching to the far-side D-man BEFORE the pass is made but that can open up a whole other can of worms for you defensively.
