My response below is in bold:
IMO, I prefer the shooting on this scheme which is pretty much skill stick. You know what they say, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. :D ...And to me, skill stick was on point. You’re right, it is just Skill Stick. I ended up agreeing with your position after really considering it. So rather than changing what was already good, I added the additional option of using P3 as Total Puck Control.
I'm not sure, is there a difference between basic puck control and total puck control? Or is it just a sort of toggle option you get when holding P1? (on/off ability to shoot) If so, it's a good idea for anyone struggling with stick handling and accidental shots.
Holding P1 would be both a way to remove accidental shots as well as adding more control to puck handling.
For example, pulling down on the Right Stick while holding P1 could pull the puck in close to your skates away from a poke without it being a full drag to the forehand or backhand, and from there you could push it out to your forehand or backhand if you want. Or, from the forehand, rolling up on the Right Stick while holding P1 could tease the puck out in front of the player on the on the forehand side, and could be pulled back by rolling the Right Stick back. Same thing goes for the backhand. (Remember, these are just a few random examples of what could be done with the extra space on the Skill Stick when shooting is removed.)
Puck protect on P3 + right stick is the best part, it would solve the issue of having it on L3 but....you need to leave Hustle on L3 though or it all come down to the same issue of having puck protect on L3 combined with hustle. They have to be separated to make puck protect and hustle their own thing. So puck protect doesnt overwrite stick handling when you hustle (which is the actual problem with Total Control).
This is a great point. You should be able to hustle and puck handle at the same time (even if hustling means that your puck skills are reduced a little). And you should be able to protect the puck without hustling.
I will update the diagram to put Hustle back on L3 Click, and I will keep Protect Puck as P3 + Right Stick.
Icon passing doesnt need the extra ''P'' as there's only 4 other guys with you on the ice so there's no real point in adding one more unless you want to add the goalie in the equation.
The extra Face Button P allows for the Face Buttons to directly correlate with the 5 positions on the team (besides goalie); this way each button is dedicated to its own position regardless of what position you are in control of. I understand that as the person controlling the puck, you only have 4 options to pass to, but having dedicated buttons for each position would provide consistency to Icon Passing; you will always know pressing Y will pass to your Right Wing (for example) which means you don’t have to hold RT (like you do now) to figure out which player has which button. And furthermore, since each position’s ‘player indicator’ currently has it’s own dedicated color, those colors could correlate with the colors of the Face Buttons to make it even easier to use Icon Passing… you would never need to actually see A, B, X, Y, or P on the screen (unless maybe if you want to turn it on in settings).
If you’re locked into a position like in World of Chel, then you just have an unused Face Button [no biggie, or it could be used as Drop Pass (see below)], but if you’re playing as the entire team like in Online Versus, then you would be using every Face Button.
Brace for hit AKA reverse hit? I would rather have it on ''A'' just like on skill stick. I would be bothered by throwing dekes by accident.
First of all, I think Reverse Hit should be almost removed entirely and replaced simply by Brace; I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a reverse hit in real hockey. Perhaps Reverse Hit could just be a perfectly timed Brace.
If the Icon Face Buttons were used for Icon Passing the way I suggest, then none would be available for Brace/Reverse Hit. I think just holding P3 (the Protect Puck paddle) could work as bracing yourself for impact. That’s essentially what protecting the puck means anyway. And double tapping P3 could be a reverse hit.
I will update the diagram to reflect this.
Drop pass, would that mean that you can't hold on a pass and use L2 at the same time? Seem a bit troublesome too.
I think that only tapping R1 while not holding the left stick still would be the best way to go. I personnally always felt comfortable using it that way.
Thanks for spotting that; I actually did not mean to change that. In addition to the original option, I guess we could use the Face Button that is dedicated to the position that you control as a Drop Pass. For example, if you are Left Defense, all you would have to do is tap A to Drop Pass / Leave Puck… or you could still do it the way it is now.
I will update the diagram to reflect this as well.
As you can tell I'm a fan of skill stick lol to me there wasnt particular changes needed.
Of course by moving the line change to the D-pad open up the door to the addition of new abilities or changes with X and B (they become unused) and if in a near future all controlers get the paddles....we can make more...like adding modifier as with your P1 modifier and puck protect on P3, which would be greatly welcome.
Honestly, I only started this “project” (if we can call it that) in an effort to give more control to Defense. Then, while I was at it, I figured I would take a stab at proposing some ideas for Offense as well. So your feedback has been super useful, @Tigidooh .
