Are those two pictures of the icon passing from the offensive zone sequence? It looks to me like # 42 switches from “A” to “B”.
Is the mapping tied to the players location on the ice (front/back + left/right) or is the mapping tied to the distance from the puck carrier?

You bet - two screens from the same sequence.
I'm hoping button mapping isn't tied to the location and rather the position, but with only 4 face buttons being used, it might be location based.

I thought position would be best at first too, but think distance from player may be the way to go. Position would be great if every player stayed in position or you were a team of 6’s that can communicate, might be tough with players switching sides of the ice or not always being able to identify the player.
I’m wondering if all passes are made in a direct line or if bank passes can be made if a defender is in the way.
