Teammate AI

Ok, so I’m hoping this works. Mind you the reason these videos are long is because I was streaming, I kind of wish they were recorded with my voice at the time because you’ll see subtle slo-mo happen because I’ll be explaining something on stream. I hope the devs see this and can help explain while I try and explain each clip.

Clip 1: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1709326037329301688?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

In this clip with the faceoff win I bring the defenseman down and around behind the net to start a break. I have a problem with the AI of the center in this situation. Mind you the only change of strategy I had changed was I really dislike the “close support” so it is now as “stay wide”. Why is it that the center Pageau goes around to the LD spot while the LD is still in the vicinity? Also in the break I’m hoping that Pageau will start going up the ice on the break with all that open space and he just stops??? Thankfully the pass goes to Lee and isn’t intercepted but it just kind of kills the whole breakout. Is there a way to get the center to start to break off the faceoff win?

Clip 2: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1709330439897243698?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

In this clip I’m confused how I tried to hold the Coyote player to the boards and even tried to push them and neither thing happened. As the replay continues you see the Coyote player who starts behind Pulock beat Pulock to the puck (ok, I’ll play along sometimes a player can sneak around another if they have more speed in a scenario). But then HOW does Pulock get control of the puck?? Because I’m getting beat to the puck I try and make Pulock push off said Coyote player but because I gain control through and behind the Coyote player, Pulock somehow on the backhand (with more power than a normal clear) YEET’s the puck down the ice. I don’t know how Pulock’s backhand gets down the ice so accurately to the goalie but that somehow saves the icing haha. I’m still confused on how that happened, maybe someone can explain how Pulock gets the puck there.

Clip 3: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1709330692688040409?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

Romanov vs Keller. In all my years of playing a game, I don’t know how to better positionally play defense than this and yet Keller without skipping a beat in one fluid motion pokes the puck off of Romanov’s stick from behind him, to getting in front with speed and away to steal the puck, to turning and scoring an absolute beaut of a goal. How does Romanov lose the puck when he’s got full body positioning on Keller? I know I’m real life Keller is quick but not that quick that he could do that all in one motion. I wish there was audio on that clip because myself and the chat during the stream articulated it so much better.

Clip 4: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1709331213771489349?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

Again like previous clip 1, I’m concerned about the speed of a break with the center up the ice, but here it works ok. My biggest concern is how the RW & LW (Barzal and Wahlstrom) are on top of each other the whole time going into the zone. Then this is where it gets even more fun and I lose it on the game, I pass to LD. From what I then wanted to do was a tic tac toe pass from LD to RD to LW for the one timer because I feel I could get a good shot off from that high, maybe have a nice rebound opportunity if it goes wide. Instead I got my RD pointing to PASS to the LW which takes him out of the play and instead forces the game to pass to the RW who is clearly out of the play, in the corner behind two Coyotes. Even though I’m trying to select the pass to my RD the puck goes to the RW because the RD is in a dumb animation that doesn’t have offensive awareness? Mind you the RD in this situation is Pelech who is rated at 84 O awareness. What is the fix in a scenario like that? I’m truly baffled.

Please EA, I love hockey, I’ve played this game for years but the quality of this game keeps going down. EA said they fixed teammate AI but under the strategies that EA has in the game it just feels like every player is constantly confused. Please I wish someone from the dev team could explain why and how this is happening in these clips. Apologies for these being twitter links as it’s the quickest way for me to get them uploaded

I have another clip that finally loaded up onto the twitter machine

    https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1709349611695915472?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

In this clip it starts with me badly missing a hit (I get it, lined it up wrong and straight up whiffed). But as the clip goes the LW Wahlstrom goes to step into position to help (I control the player after swap from the D miss), Pulock then steps up into position (WHY). Now they are colliding into each other and can barely move, thankfully I poke the puck away, Horvat taps the puck back away from the Coyote player. Now both Pelech and Pulock are on top of each other trying to go after a puck and get tangled. Somehow Pelech (the farthest of the two) gets the puck. How and why??? Pulock is in such better positioning to pick up the puck but doesn’t reach. A turnover is then caused and thankfully the Coyote player doesn’t handle the loose puck and I can get it back and start on a break. The break itself falls apart immediately because I’m trying to lightly pass it to Barzal who is RIGHT THERE and he gets completely lost. The puck goes to the other D and the clip ends as another turnover is about to ensue because the main player I intended to pass to forgets how to play hockey for a quick second. How does one fix this?? Please help. I wanna play NHL but I can’t if this keeps happening

Those are great examples of poor AI and game play itself. This kind of stuff needs to be fixed but sadly, it never is. It's getting worse and worse to the point that this game is becoming unplayable.

I know previous clips have been about teammate AI, but here’s one of CPU AI that if I were controlling I would’ve been dumbfounded and angry AF.

    https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1710510289362305135?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

in the clip above, Montreal forward gets to the puck first and smartly chips the puck to the defenseman behind him… BUT the defenseman lifts his foot and the farther defenseman is too far back to receive. Thanks to that I cut off and score. My question is, why is it that when you go to pass to the person you want the CPU just randomly decides no and cause a turnover that could’ve been avoided??

Sidebar to the clip above, please let us have the option in offline modes to go back to the button celly’s. It just looks so dumb after scoring to just be doing the lifeless glide before the cut to the spotlight celly. I’m not the biggest fan of the spotlight celly it’s just that the lifeless glide just takes the emotion out of the game.

    Second clip: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1710510457834934503?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

In this clip again is all about CPU AI. Why is it that this CONSTANTLY happens throughout the game on both sides? Players (this time Montreal) just collide at center ice and because of it, gives me a 2v1 breakaway? I know I would be so angry on the other side if this happened. So my question I guess is why do the players keep colliding on defense and offense? Is there a workaround or an upcoming patch?

Also again PLEASE make there an option for button celly’s after goals. It’s dearly missed in the offline community

It’s been a week. Here’s some more, mind you these two clips happened back-to-back. And you wonder why the offline community is getting angrier.

    clip 1- https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1712596474104516682?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

In this clip we have the winger coming up along the boards as I look for freedom or an outlet pass. One forward (the center) does a logical thing of fight in front of the net 👍🏻, the other forward goes to attempt to skate into the corner to get open, hopefully a one-timer 👍🏻. LD stays put, love it. Here comes the anger. The RD either instead of staying put and being a mini traffic cone, or goes to fill the spot in which the winger was, just glides back not only to cut me off but be a damn brick wall and kill the whole play!!! After finally garnering freedom with a pass to the LD, AI for the winger skates at him? Or stops and gets confused like the RD like they don’t know where to go. To make it even funnier during the slo mo, as I try to pass back to the winger (why EA logic is backhand into the defender instead of forehand to him idk) the two forwards are STANDING ON TOP OF EACH OTHER in the faceoff circle pointing their sticks at who to pass to, instead of you know… trying to get OPEN.

    Clip 2- https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1712596750848954822?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

over the years EA has said, even in these forums that this isn’t suppose to happen yet here we are. I understand both sides did a forwards line change, but then to sit there AFTER the change like what are we doing?? It’s a 0-0 game near the end of the 1st period? We conserving energy? Like please someone from EA help me understand the AI logic PLEASE!?!?!

@EA_Aljo anything from the devs on these clips and issues?

@EA_Aljo I have a new one for you.

    Clip: https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1719549541215527153?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

This one instance I went to pass back to the center who was open and behind me. As the puck is going towards the center he lifts his leg and the puck is instead going to the point to the d-man that’s covered. And because I was thinking the puck was going to the center I have my left stick going left as if he were to pick the puck up and score. So now the D man skates away from the play and the puck leaves the zone. This is an instance that’s happening way too much with passing. What setting do I have to change or slider do I need to fix with this?

Next clip is another complaint that I’ve had for a long time. I thought this was suppose to be fixed? Here’s 30 seconds of gameplay where the cpu that’s down 4 in the third just stops playing. Like the fact I could even line change like this is just jaw dropping

    Clip- https://twitter.com/boredjason/status/1719550065750990946?s=46&t=VDcTiKkgVNHIhpeMzhe1jg

    Hopefully these are good quality

Great clips. I am glad you brought up the weird movement of the center during the breakouts especially after the faceoff. I love utilizing the center (which totally confuses your average opponet in ovp) but in this year's version feels like they are playing with handbrake on
