Icon "Auto Sauce" Passes?
What makes an Icon Pass become a saucer pass and are they really just automatic? I am back in the practice lab with a new test on if this is again a hidden mechanic built into the game or just weird programming...
We have all known Icon passes to exist in the game but are never sure when, if we perform an icon pass, it will be a saucer or not. Well in my testing I have found out that you can, as it seems, manually control a pass to become a saucer pass to a teammate. The way to perform this mechanic is by, at the same time, pressing the pass and icon at the same time or in quick succession.
This test was done in practice mode using a 5v0 team setup. I performed two separate tests which you can see starts on the skate over to the corner of blue line and then the second half starts after the deke. I performed the following pass sequence of XBXBY. The first half was by me doing so while holding the pass button down briefly and then pressing the icon of the player I wanted to go to. The second test I was then using this newly acquired method of at the same time tapping the pass and icon buttons. You can see based on this replay result that one only does on ice passes while the second does only saucer passes.
So is this just a hidden mechanic to icon passes that no one has figured out up unto this point or is it just a coincidence with the way the mechanic was programmed into the game?
Note: In my testing, it only works with skill stick users and does not work with the reverse hit of A/Cross button.
