Poke-check wonkiness

I actually think poke-checks are in a better place in NHL 25 than they have been in recent years, but there's still some kinks to work out.   My main concern is that quite often the poke check doesn't move the puck when it should.  It may dislodge it briefly from the offensive player's stick, but it doesn't get knocked away like it should.  This often just results in the offensive player picking the puck right back up.

There are plenty of time where poke-checks in situations exactly like the clips below are successful and do knock the puck away.  But there are still too many (IMO) plays where we get results like the ones below.  I'd like to see more consistency.   Especially when the defender is hustling and "carrying" the puck with one hand on the stick.

Context:  EASHL club games. The defenders in these clips have between 90-92 defensive awareness and stick checking.

I'll start with the least egregious example.  On the surface this looks bad, but I think because the main thrust of the poke didn't happen until after the animation moving the defender's stick into place ( and through the offensive player's stick and the puck ) was finished the actual "poke" portion of the animation wasn't touching the puck.  Still looks bad at a glance though.

In the next two clips the offensive player is carrying the puck with one hand on the stick, so you'd think it should be easy to knock away.  But in both cases the defender's poke goes right through or somehow under the puck and just brings it to a stop.

And lastly, there the times where the initial thrust of the poke check isn't enough to knock the puck away, but the animation of pulling the stick back can pick up the puck and return it to the offensive player.

  • I can't be the only one that tries to pokecheck the puck, from the puck carrier, only to watch my character's stick go 180 degrees the opposite way and the puck carrier keeps skating it in for a goal.

And although you absolutely railroad the oncoming puck carrier, and they're slowly getting back up, the puck stays stuck to them despite a couple of us trying to get the puck. This is several to 5 seconds of poke checking, and no one but the individual that got checked to the ice can pick up the puck and skate as if nothing happened.

"EA SPORTS! You can't make this **bleep** up."

I agree 100% the poke check has been reduced in effectiveness.

I believe EA did this up purpose so we arent able to spam the poke check.

I have yes noticed when I poke the puck off the opposing players stick, the puck moves a few feet away and half a second later the opposing player picks up the loose puck and then scores, as my goalie is completely out of position.

I have learned not to spam the poke check as much but still find it frustrating, when knocking the puck off the players stick and the puck bounces right on to his team mates stick when the puck direction is in no relation to the pucks new no direction, making no physical sense.

My belief their is some logic in the calculation that gives the opposing team a advantaged to get this loose puck. As the puck direction makes no sense at all.

The puck should be going to where no one is, the direction of the poke check, not one foot away where buddy reaches behind himself, picks it up and then scores.

The magnetic puck after successful poke check is just awful this year, should be removed altogether.

  • I don't think the offensive player picking the puck back up immediately would be as annoying if it weren't for the fact that pokechecks basically stop you in your tracks. Going for pokechecks is risky enough because of the speed deduction, but letting offensive players pick the puck back up immediately on top of that is ridiculous.

Between passes going straight through players with defensive builds, poke checks being nerfed, and defensive skill stick doing nothing, I'm not really sure what tools defenders really have, tbh.

  • These are great examples. I feel pokes are working a bit more better in 25 in comparison to last year, HOWEVER, it's the auto-pickups that continue to be absolute crap for defenders. Even when you have forwards sprinting down the wing and you get a good poke, the momentum doesn't carry the puck out of the range of the auto-pickup. Because you are still in a poke animation, the forward gets the chance to auto-pick it up before you even have a chance to react.

Another big issue is when EA makes new mechanics they never seem to TEST how these mechanics work in all situations. The new mechanics where players will slide by other players instead of running into them also hinders the D's ability to use the body to block a player's path and/or movement. So if you poke, the puck dies, the auto-pickup happens, in the past you still might be able block their path just by being there, but now it feels like you're covered in oil and they just slide right by. I almost wouldn't have an issue with this particular thing, but because the poke slows you down so much, defenders are left with a disadvantage that's not their fault. It's the same issue with gimping zone clears under pressure, or the pressure gauge not going down even when you clear the zone, or giving attackers with pressure extra energy.

EA's MO. Keep adding whatever without making sure there's game balance.

Hey there. Thanks for gathering these clips. I'll pass this on to the team.

Unfortunately, these videos were collected last year, 2 years ago. and the dialogue ended with exactly the same phrase.
