Why is the push shove so useless?

I know there are threads on hitting already but I wanted to touch specifically on the push shove (pushing up on the RS or pressing B on total controls). Last year I actually thought it was balanced pretty well and maybe could have been toned down a bit in effectiveness but this year it has basically zero utility as even in situations where you are in good position and have momentum on your side you just bounce off of the puck carrier and barely even disrupt them. It's gotten to the point where I have trained myself to not use it at all and just go for stick lifts and poke checks instead. I would love to see it bumped up to be somewhere between the current iteration and what we saw last year. Currently people are nearly invincible when they are protecting the puck because the push shove is not a real threat to knock them off the puck.

  • I've noticed this, too. I'll have a guy closed off at the boards where I'm shoving him to knock him off the puck, and he'll just walk through the shoves like nothing happened.

For the record I mainly play Online Versus but this applies to HUT / WOC as well.

  • I don't remember the push shove ever being effective - it's just more incentive to learn the new and proper shoulder check.

Better yet, just destroy people with a funny hipcheck

It was very effective last year in my experience. If you were in a good position you could routinely knock people off the puck and collect it to move the puck back the other way.. The shoulder check is somewhat effective but not always practical to use and risks taking you out of the play entirely.

I feel that in NHL 24 the push shove was a bit more effective (I play offline).

With NHL 25 - the push shove still is every effective for the AI but I find there is a nerf or change to how it works (it's useless at all times now).

I think that is where my issue lies. Prime example of this is a win in the offensive zone back to the right or left defense man- it's usually an 80% chance the AI will push shove you off the puck, which can lead to a breakaway or odd man rush but if it's attempted by my user controller player doing the same sort of movement it just slides off of them with no loss to their balance, momentum or loss of puck.

It really can build an imbalance and to a point show that the AI has a controlled advantage over the user.

I don't play offline much but definitely the AI is very effective with the push shoves which can be frustrating.
