Poke check passing through teammate and causing a trip

How when you poke check and your own player is just in front of you your stick still somehow is able to somehow pass through your teammate and still trip a NPC when you can even touch a puck usually when you are to close to a NPC? So my stick go through a NPC on my team but yet I can’t use my stick when I am to close to a NPC from another team unless I am at least even with the NPC?
