it's a sad truth that exclusive licensing has killed indie development for sports video games. sure, some games exist out there. but anyone trying to make a real competitor to EA's games runs into the same wall: fans want to play with their favorite teams/players.
NOW, i would argue that every person who plays Chel/EASHL will tell you they don't care at all about having a quality online experience WITH irl NHL players.
if someone made a quality competitor to EA's NHL i do believe that the EASHL crowd might hop on. We don't care about HUT. we don't need any of that, we just want a quality online competitive game, built and designed around that experience.
another sad truth: EA is focused on making money (they are a business) and as such, they will do everything they can to make as much money as possible to justify their jobs. not the actual gameplay experience, but money. that's it.
i agree tho, i do wish we could opensource/crowdsource a NEW hockey game. i would play it!

I think what you and CharlesConway333 said may well be true. This game franchise had it all together back in 2014. The collectors and NHL fan part as well as the online competition part. I do understand that EA's only goal is to make money, because they are a business at the end and they get screwed by their shareholders if they do not make a [REMOVED] of it. Considering that the competitive digital hockey players might not care so much about irl teams and players is something I did not take into consideration a lot. Maybe this could lead to someone doing something in the EASHL domain. I doubt it, but it would at least put some pressure on EA to get their developers on track again.
