The player is executing a one-touch-pass animation. This means that while the puck was travelling to the player's stick, you hit the pass button. This is evidenced by the fact that player control switched to McDavid the instant the puck touches his stick. This doesn't happen on a deflection.
There should be some kind of logic for when a player has a clearly wide open net in these situations and any one-touch-pass input is nulled in favor of a deflection.
