The problem is unlocks more comfortably fit in a persistent Games as a Service model. For GaaS, there is only one version of the game across years so whatever you unlock stays relevant for a longer period of time. In many ways NHL functions as a GaaS product, except we are buying a new version every year. (Note- I know we don't have to buy it annually, but to get the latest gameplay enhancements and the online populations, your are stuck in the annual cycle). There does seem to some flexibility opening up in the system as NHL 26 let you carry over some of your EASHL club's info from NHL 25. Ultimately, if they are going to keep pumping out yearly games but feature all these samey unlocks, they should allow a lot more to carry from version to version.
