Disappointment

I'm quitting this game.

This was the first NHL game i ever got. And i want to immediately say, the only mode I'm interested in is BAP.

I'm going to list all the problems i found out about this mode. They're not in any order.

  1. The draft is stupid. If you're projected 1st, you may only get drafted 1st, 3rd, 5th or 7th. Any other position is impossible to obtain. I don't even know if it's possible to start the draft interview projected lower than 1st.
  2. For some reason that only the geniuses at EA know, selecting a team to get drafted by gives you -2 in two attributes. Why? You make it impossible to get drafted by some teams, then you penalize me for trying to compensate for it?
  3. You cannot get information about any other team in the league. You can only know about your lines. You cannot take a look at the opponent before a game: you need to find out their lineups during the game. That's baffling to me. The amount of info about the league itself is almost nonexistent.
  4. Changing the difficulty only changes things for YOU. It basically makes it harder for you to score and control the puck. Nothing else changes, your teammates and opponents don't get affected by it, and the AI remains the same. Teams put up 5+ goals a game almost always anyway.
  5. The challenges throughout the season are unbalanced. If you go on and complete all challenges, you end up competing for scoring titles and the Stanley Cup as a rookie. The game tries at all costs to make you a prodigy from the start, and constantly criticizes you and penalizes you if you actually get realistic rookie results. Do I HAVE to be a Celebrini?
  6. The moment you get drafted to a team, that team becomes the best team in the league. If you get drafted to a rebuilding team that came in last in its division last season, the team suddenly wins games 5-1 and 7-0 against the strongest teams in the league. That's boring, unrealistic, and it makes having a great performance mundane: it doesn't matter if you scored 2 goals, because you won by 5 anyway, since your teammates are suddenly the best players in the league. This makes good performances during a loss incredibly rare, for example.
  7. The in-game simulation is completely broken and it's the main reason games look like a circus in here. Every time there's a line change, you get to the bench and you simulate until your next shift. 95% of the time at least one goal happens during the simulated stretch (usually by your team, because you HAVE to win as much as possible, right?). This means that 1st periods end with 3+ goals most of the time. Which means that game results get so bloated that they look ridiculous. And by the way, there is NO setting deducated to the in-game simulation, and changing the difficulty does not affect it.
  8. Speaking of simulation, if you only dare simulate games while you're less than 82-83 OVR, the game will kill your performance right away. If you don't score a goal or get assists, you automatically played bad. I've had simulated games where my player got a 0 Form Score. How. Please tell me. I've also had simulated games that showed a goal by my player at the end of simulation, only to change the score and player stats once I advance. But bugs are not uncommon here, right?
  9. I hate how much this game mode tries to suck your **bleep**. The news article is always about your player. Doesn't matter what anyone else has done. Doesn't matter if you played bad or good. Doesn't matter if McDavid scored 25 goals in one game. Doesn't matter if you're an awful rookie playing 4th line. Here's your face on first page, because you're always leading your team according to the media. It's so cringe.
  10. Sometimes rewards from interviews or dialogues straight up disappear, be it health, trait points or x factor points. It's so annoying.
  11. Gameplay sliders are lazy as **bleep**. There is no distinction between opponents and teammates sliders. That would solve a lot: my CPU teammates are playing too much like gods? Turn their sliders down. The opponent goalie is letting too many shots through? Turn his sliders up. But no, because if you turn the sliders up or down, they will affect both teams, effectively undoing anything you were trying to balance. Wow.

Basically, in BAP, either you start as a prodigy that competes with the best players in the league for scoring titles and Stanley Cup on your rookie year, or you start as a failure drafted by a team that is destroying every other team in the league, doesn't matter who they are. I'm playing on All-Star difficulty btw.

I am also sure I'm forgetting some points but i don't have all night.

Realism is completely optional for EA.

And look, the solution would be so **bleep** simple. Put player lock (NOT position lock) in Franchise Mode. 2k has it, and it's the absolute best way to play a career on there. Franchise mode has everything BAP is missing. Except player lock.

**bleep** this game. One of the biggest disappointments of recent years. And it's a shame because i just started getting into Hockey as well.

I'm really sorry about this rant. I could not believe there was a game worse than 2k. But here we are.

P.S.: everything i wrote here is obviously my own personal opinion and I do not speak for anyone but me. If you'd like, you can share your opinions on all this, even though i realize reading this wall of text is exhausting enough.

  • I completely agree with the idea that the entire game mode is essentially you against the whole NHL—one player versus the entire league; it completely lacks substance, and the other players are just forced filler on a team where only one character matters—it’s all about you. "Be a Pro" is the right game mode for me too, but right now I’ve completely stopped playing. I’ve considered "Franchise Mode" with position locking, but I can’t stick with it for long; it just doesn’t feel the same.

I think EA ought to just pull the plug now and take a long break, because GTA 6 is coming, and that’s when players will leave for sure. It would be a good time to start making a proper game instead of trying to keep this truly appalling mess on life support...
