NHL 13 BaP player with two questions regarding NHL 20 BaP

Hey guys!

I'm an old fellow who is still playing NHL 13, but I've been thinking about getting myself a PS4 and NHL 20. I only play BaP however and there are two questions that decide whether or not I will do this and I was hoping that someone here would be kind enough to answer. I have been watching youtube videos to try to figure this out but I still need a little clarification.

The first thing I want to know is about how the leveling of your pro works. In 13 you just assign points to different skills and the upside for me with a system like that is that I can skip assigning points and keep my pro fairly bad. I do this, especially in regards to my pro's skating ability, in order to not make the game to easy. I don't want to be the new Gretzky and torch the league.

From what I have gathered it seems that one chooses which skills the player should practice on. It also seems like he can get bonus skill points by doing certain things during games?

But basically what I want to know is: Can I purposely keep my pro slow and bad? If I avoid choosing practicing assignments, will that then be automatically assigned or will the pro not gain any skill points at all?

Another thing that I noticed when I watched BaP vids on youtube was that there seemed to be quite a lot of trades? And quite dumb ones at that..? I know NHL 21 was really bad in that regard but how is NHL 20? Has any patches made the trading somewhat realistic?

In NHL 13 it is not too bad. Not many trades are made but what I do is I save my game all the time so when a stupid trade appears I just restart. But NHL 20 doesn't really have the 'transaction news' feed that NHL 13 does, right? It's not as easy to keep track of the trades I think?

This is important to me because I don't want the lineups all jumbled up. Really ruins it for me!

Would really appreciate any clarification on these topics! Thanks in advance!!

  • @Ringkvist13 I am booting up NHL 20 right now and starting a new Be a Pro..
For the training aspect.. you are able to choose what you train.. similar to assigning points.. so you can choose to never assign training.. and you’ll get very little XP from that..
I simmed 36 games in the CHL… total weekly XP gain without assigning training is 300-500XP scattered across all categories.. skating.. physical.. senses.. shooting.. puck skills etc.. so it can take a long time to level up skating if you never train it… you will get some XP from simulating games.. roughly half of the 300-500 XP is from simulated games.. the other half is from coach assigned training which you can’t stop as far as I can tell… but coach only assigns 1 or 2 things a week which isn’t much..
if you play games you will get more XP because things like doing a stick lift in a game will grant you XP.. same thing with shot blocks, poke checks etc.. you can also lose XP like for getting stick lifted, getting checked etc…

As for the trades.. so far it seems fine.. smaller typical trades.. some rentals.. Spurgeon and Koivu to sharks for two 1sts.. a little excessive.. but that’s the biggest trade that year.. rest are small depth trades.. 2nds and 3rds etc..

During the offseason you will get 600-900 or so even with training off.. but that’s not too bad really..

  • @Ringkvist13 Once I get into the NHL I’ll take a look at all the NHL lines and see if the rosters are all crazy or not… the AI for the GM’s in NHL 20 isn’t too good.. it’s pretty bad actually in the Franchise Mode but not sure about the Be a Pro… I’ll check and let you know

Stay away from the Be a Pro in NHL 21 and 22 though… the game is super easy… you only play 4ish games before the entry draft.. no juniors.. no AHL.. and if you score 1 goal in the 4 games.. you get selected 1st overall more often than not…
Also the roster turnover in NHL 21/22 Be a Pro is crazy… teams turn over their roster every season… teams don’t abide to salary cap rules.. it’s bad my friend don’t go to it..
  • @Ringkvist13There is some roster turnover.. like seeing Ovi on the bolts…. But not too excessive..
The bolts were at 107M cap hit though… in 2020/2021 so obviously not abiding by cap rules either… but it’s somewhat tolerable compared to NHL 21&22….

lots of RFA’s get offer sheeted though because the GM has terrible AI… so stars like Makar will end up with other teams because the Avs GM doesn’t know how to clear cap space to sign him…

Wow thanks a bunch for the in depth answer bud!!

It’s pretty hard for me to gauge how much xp leads to a skill point etc. I also play most of my games in full which would lead to more xp then I assume. In NHL 13 I always strive for limiting my speed, acc and agility to 80-81. Would that be doable during a whole career in NHL 20 or would it get topped after a couple of seasons?
Now, I can’t be sure however that I would need to do exactly that same thing in NHL 20 since the game might be harder overall than 13? Perhaps the AI is smarter and more aggressive etc… Sort of seems like it when I watch youtube videos at least. In 13 it’s pretty static and dumb. The AI rarely uses its hustle and full speed for some reason…

A follow up question regarding the trades: do you think it would be possible to do what I do in 13? Is there a ‘transaction news’ type log I can look at and keep track of trades happening, so that I can save every other day and just restart when trades occur?

Thanks again bud and have a great weekend!

  • @Ringkvist13 no prob.. I am passionate offline player and hockey fan.. I wish I would have asked about NHL 21 and 22 before I bought them.. then I wouldn’t have and saved my money instead of getting ripped off lol…

Yes there is a news tracker page, or activity feed whatever it’s called… you can filter and see trades, FA signings, injuries, waivers etc…

It only keeps records though for the last months or so.. but if you check it frequently shouldn’t be an issue..

The AI is better.. still not great but they do pressure you, and your team AI is okay..

After quite a few seasons I’m sure your skating/agility/acceleration etc will start increasing, but there are lots of sliders where y out can adjust human player acceleration/speed etc compared to AI.. so you might be able to find a nice balance by tweaking the gameplay sliders… and adjusting difficulty… I think what you want is obtainable.. just a matter of experimenting and figuring it out through trial and error…

You should be able to find NHL 20 for cheap.. it is probably worth the pickup just to try it out and tweak it to your liking…

Stay far away from NHL 21 and NHL 22 though.. giving you a fair warning… they are very bad lol.. particularly for us offline players..
