Re: Nhl 22 input lag and delay

I haven't posted in a few months, and essentially stopped playing the game except a few times a month to test it out. I've been dealing with awful input delay since about December. I replaced every piece of hardware possible, upgraded my internet and had that tested. I did have an Xbox server upload issue which recently resolved, and yet NHL was still delayed. Online and offline this issue manifested. It didn't make sense. Especially since, say, MLB22 did not have this issue.

I've factory reset my Xbox Series X a dozen times (even briefly bought a new Series S). I've reinstalled the game another 20 times. But what I just did yesterday for the first time was delete all NHL save data from my Xbox. I don't think deleting the game itself does this, or even transferring data onto a new Xbox. Long story short......my input delay felt much better for the first time in ages. Now, I played tonight, and it started to feel worse and worse, close to as bad as before. So, I deleted all save data again, reloaded the game, and.....it felt normal-ish again. I'm convinced there is some bug that corrupts save data or something and causes the input delay. I'll try this again tomorrow, maybe multiple times.

Your HUT is saved on our servers so deleting this data won't affect it. To delete your personal saved data, press the Guide button and then highlight the NHL 22 tile. Then, hit the Menu button. It's the small one to the right of the Guide button with 3 horizontal lines on it. Next, go to Manage game and add-ons > Saved data. Delete the file with your gamertag on it. There is the risk of losing offline saves and changes to settings you've made. Normally, those download from the cloud, but I can't guarantee this. Let me know what happens.

  • @HYDEEZY

No. It all saves on Cloud. I posted that 3 weeks ago, but after a couple nights, my delay returned despite repeatedly deleting all data. I noticed that it still loads the game as it does previously if you delete all your data. So, I figured out if you do it while offline, then delete all data, then load the game, it will boot up from scratch -- like when you loaded it for the first time. It felt a bit better again when I did that.

No one even responded to my post in 3 weeks, so I can tell how urgent a matter this is. But I'm still convinced something is corrupting the cache or the game data. I've replaced every single piece of hardware, and this issue happens online and offline. Nothing makes sense except that. I purchased another Xbox yesterday (I have my original Series X, then tested a Series S in February) just to clear up loose ends.

I think you've done most everything I can suggest. I don't see you mentioning QoS. Does your router support this? If so, make sure it's enabled. Also, is game mode enabled on your TV/monitor? I assume so, but haven't seen a mention of that yet either.

  • @EA_AljoMy router does not have QoS, but I'm plugged directly into my personal modem without any sort of traffic besides myself. I have a 1 ms BenQ monitor and a 1 ms ASUS, and they both have the same issues. Both have worked previously until this started occurring around December. Other games I don't detect this issue.

    ************

Again, I usually test this issue in offline Free Skate. Which means it can't be internet related. It feels infinitely worse in online of course. I played the last two nights on my new Series S, and it felt good at first, but night two it started feeling heavy. I switched to my Series X tonight, and my usual input delay was there (including my weird stops whenever trying to turn). I switched back to my Series S within minutes, and while those input stop/start issues weren't there which makes the game unplayable, it still felt unmistakably heavy in offline Free Skate......

But within half an hour, after resetting my Series S a couple times and deleting my NHL data, I went into Free Skate, and lo and behold, my exact stop/start delay issues were there on my NEW Xbox with a brand new controller and HDMI.

The only possible thing that makes any sense is that there is a bug with the game that affects the cloud or cache or both. I don't know why it's happening to me or my data file, but it's not happenstance that night 1 it felt fine out of the box before getting worse nights 2 and 3. But 3 Xboxs have this exact issue online and offline? With every piece of hardware replaced? I'm well past the point of insanity trying to decipher this issue. It's so clearly a game issue. I wish a game engineer could be of some help.

Thanks for the details. We'll certainly keep an eye out for this. Personally, I play on both an Xbox One and Xbox Series X with no delay. I have had input lag issues in the past, but using game mode as well as upgrading my router took care of that. Regardless, we're not aware of an issue within the game that is causing this as we don't get that many reports of this in comparison to the overall playerbase. I'm not saying we don't know for sure that it's an issue with the game or servers, but so far, we're not able to reproduce it. There's a lot going on with connections we can't test for though. It could be unique to your equipment and ISP. It's very odd that this happens in free skate. I haven't seen reports of that in the past but will keep monitoring for them.

  • @EA_AljoThe only thing that makes sense is some data is corrupted and being transferred over from system to system. If this was only online? I don't have ISP issues but sure, plausible. But offline modes too? Tonight, my new Series S feels exactly the same as my old Series X. Unmistakably.

My router/modem has been upgraded along with my internet package to a GB download plan. But I'm sure it's not that b/c it's offline. There's not a piece of hardware connected to my gaming that hasn't been swapped 2-5x. I even purchased NHL22 on disc just for the yucks.

I wish there was a way to totally erase all my data from my account, just to test this out. Something is corrupted with the game data or how it interacts with my Xboxs because it's moving from system to system like a virus.

You could try creating a different gamertag. That would let you start over on a fresh account. Otherwise, there isn't anything else I can suggest other than upgrading your router. It sounds like you've done everything else. I know you've already upgraded it, but the fact that it doesn't support QoS means it's not quite up to par with better routers.

  • @EA_Aljo I get there's nothing you can do about this -- probably only a game engineer could help -- but we're going in circles. It's OFFLINE too, which means there is not a router on planet Earth that can fix that. It's a brand new modem anyway. QoS handles bandwidth traffic -- it's just me, plugged directly into the modem, there is no other traffic. I have frequented this forum long enough to know I'm not the first person told to upgrade my router (I did!), but it would do nothing. I play MLB The Show without issues.

It's a software issue, I think, and I don't know what it is. The only thing transferring from Xbox to Xbox is cloud data. I'm not sure why my Series S worked fine out of the box before getting worse.

The thing that's odd is that if this were a software problem, most likely, everyone would be experiencing it or we'd at least have a far higher number of reports. It's pretty rare someone says they're lagging in modes outside of HUT or EASHL. At any rate, we'll keep an eye out for other reports.

  • Not everyone has to have an issue for one person to have an issue. Especially when it comes to a bug or corrupted data or whatever. Maybe some people haven't spent the 100 hours experimenting on it, like me, to narrow it down. The issue is there for me, and that's beyond a reasonable doubt.  I can only hope NHL23 does not have this issue.

It’s actually creepy how closely this guys issues mirror mine. Literally everything. It’s not ping related. Something related to cloud storage and save data on the game just constantly messes with the amount of input lag there is and it totally messes with the skating, pickups, turning, everything. Weirdly it is manageable in versus but unplayable in EASHL. Restarting the Xbox, deleting game data, seem to have short term effects but it never lasts.

I was clinging to the hope that NHL23 would not have this delay issue. Sure enough, the beta feels just as bad. No one can diagnose the issue or give me anything remotely constructive. I'm so far beyond my breaking point, I don't think I can continue to purchase or play this game. I can play another game like MLB: The Show without issue, and I guess I'll continue to do so.

We're getting very few reports of this with the Technical Test, but will of course keep an eye out for any issues.

The Technical Test ended on Sunday so you won't be able to connect to it.

@EA_Aljo Come on man... You're looking evil at this point. Just admit it's a big problem. I'm done with this game. I've been playing since NHL 98. You guys are unreal.

Hey, have found this thread whilst trying to find some kind of solution as I've been playing NHL 21 through to 22 religiously with no issues and no equipment changes but the last few months the game has become unplayable, the lag is horrendous and it's only on NHL, nothing else.

I'm in the UK, my internet is fine, no issues and I game online on various other titles but only get issues with NHL. Having ordered NHL 23 I'm hoping this gets rid of the lag issue but ready to send it back if it does lag like NHL 22 is now.

What is confusing for me having followed the thread, is that my game has worked fine for so long, across 2 games, it's only the last 4 or 5 months the lag is unplayable.

I've finished the thread and doesn't seem to be a solution to it, and doesn't sound like EA are looking into it?

(Yes my TV is in game mode too 😉 )

Are you getting input lag or is your game stuttering or stopping and then starting again, but playing fast?

    Hi,

I'm experiencing this on Xbox Series X on FIFA 23 (huge delay even in solo) . I followed what you have said @DeliveryForKiki : I deleted all my saves (and disconnected from the internet) then I launched an offline  game and the game is super smooth! then after one game it seems to be less responsive. Everytime I do this, the games becomes more responsive! Like on NHL.

  • @regista6 You’re not alone , can’t turn properly, speed burst is not existent, poke check brushes against the puck only yo have it magnetically go back to the opposition, I’m pretty much done. Gonna get a refund tomorrow
