Are you only using computer defenders? If you have human defenders, they may want to play a little more aggressively and break up those plays before they happen. If you're using computer defenders, try using the High Pressure strategy. That will get them to play the carrier more. 

If you can provide some video of the pick-up issues you're seeing, we'll review it. I've seen this happen as well, but normally it means you're not in a good position to pick up the puck. Ratings are also being considered in these situations.
