Why can’t I play online co-op with someone on the same console on nhl 18?

I am trying to play online co-op with someone on the same console as me because that is an option that is given, however I can’t start a game when I try to. Why is this and how do I fix it?

Cannot connect Guest 1 to my online versus play to play couch mode vs an online opponent. I am player 1 and signed into my psn. It says to hold L1 to enable another player to join but when trying it doesnt work. Anyone else experience this?

    I have no clue how to do couch play with my son to unlock heroes in NHL 18 for PS4. I select him but we don't have the option to continue our game. Please help.
