It doesn't sound like you're missing any of the options currently available in Origin.
Those would just be displaying yourself Online, Away, or Invisible/Offline. Afraid there's not currently an option to be online and in-game without that appearing in your friends list info, or to only display that information to select individuals from your friends list.
I know that is a setting in other programs I use so I can definitely see where you're coming from here, thanks for the feedback!

As far as I'm aware the functionality for this is the same in the EA Desktop app as well so I've not heard of any changes to this particular situation, but I'll pass the feedback along!
