I checked to see if I could update to Mojave OS and the update didn't show up.

You have to look in the App Store for the upgrade to a later OS. If you can’t get to Mojave you should be able to upgrade to at least El Capitan. Which model Mac do you have?

Great. It’s upgradeable to Mojave. Just open the App Store, search for Mojave and download and install it. Make sure you back up your Mac first 🙂
