Moved to the Origin forum.
Run the Origin reset tool then launch Origin again. Login and make sure to allow any permissions that pop up.
Check the Game Library installation file path is either ~Applications (default location) or /Applications (my preferred location, see here as to why). Then try to download the game.

Thank you very much for answering @Bluebellflora.
I did what you noted and downloaded and ran the Origin reset tool and I logged back in (no prompts came up). I double-checked and the game was set to install in my /Applications folder (see attached).
And I still received the download failed message. I'm just going to ask because I have no idea what it could be, but is there anything else I could do?

Your user account Applications folder? Or the Macintosh HD Applications folder? The screenshot is cut off so I can't see the whole file path.
In System Preferences > Security & Privacy check that Origin has Full Disk Access.
