Spore crashes on start up

Hello, I recently bought spore on steam and installed it.  Upon start up, I get the message "configuration script failed [2000]".  I click okay, and get a black screen as if the game is starting up.  I then imeaditily get another pop-up that says "could not find a needed package.  The data directory is missiing or corrupt [1004]."  I was just wondering why I am getting these error messages, and what can be done to fix them.  I have a windows 7 if it helps.  Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
