X box controller wireless with x box wireless adapter for windows 10 - Done the repair route already and launching from the EA app - controller did work ok in the game before it did an automatic update Monday. Done all the other things as suggested but seeing as how it worked ok in the game before the update, surely the update is the problem.

No - it's the wireless model, however I have sorted the issue somewhat. I had my EA account linked with my Xbox pass and once I had unlinked these the controller worked ok up to a point. The 'A' button doesn't work correctly - it shows the overhead of the hole as opposed to making the shot on the 3 click option.
