Improving or Replacing Frostbite to Improve Physics for Next Iteration
EA PGA Tour has had known issues with ball physics and here is a list of some of them.
- A missed putt is in a lip-hanger state where the ball is levitating above the hole.
- During a putt, the ball goes past the hole like it hit a plastic wrap or manhole cover.
- There is a tractor beam forcing the ball towards the bunker or tree even if shot is impossible. I.e making a drive with a hybrid that has a 269 yard range and manages to hit a bunker 320 yards away. This is common in Lighthouse Point.
- A backspin that could drive a ball backwards 69 yards going in uphill direction. This is common in Cardi Creek (Wolf Creek) and Chambers Bay.
- Ball moves in opposite direction of wind. For example, ball is way short of green even if 25 mph tailwind is present. Common in Cardi Creek.
- The ball goes way past the green using 3 or 4 iron for long approach while sticking like glue way short using a 5-iron
The current game uses the Frostbite Engine, and this means Frostbite, we have a problem. The Frostbite Engine has been around since 2008. For improving or replacing Frostbite, Bruce Buffer needs to grab the mic and say his catchphrase “It’s Time”. MLB the Show has a good engine with sound ball physics and would be a good candidate to use for future games especially next iterations for PGA Tour. Other EA titles like Madden, NHL and EA FC also need an improved or updated engine that has consistent physics for next iterations. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 did not run with Frostbite and it was absolutely amazing with accurate ball physics. Madden 25th Anniversary at same time was also great before Frostbite. Rory was the first golf game to use Frostbite and it was a letdown. A recommended name for new engine would be True Physics Engine.
