PGA Tour Shuts Down My PC

Product: EA SPORTS PGA TOUR
Platform:PC
Summarize your bug Five times I've tried to play this game and five times it locks up and shuts down my PC.
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? IDK, on my end it just either shuts down my computer or it locks up and I have to do CTRL+ALT+DEL or restart the PC.
What happens when the bug occurs? My THREE DAY OLD Alienware Liquid Cooled R14 AMD Ryzen 9 just shuts down.
What do you expect to see? For $92, I expect to have gameplay!!

Hello,

Five times I've tried to play your much ballyhooed "PGA Tour The Masters" game on my PC and five times it's crashed it. Not just stopped the game mind you, it flat out shuts down my computer. When I'm doing anything else on the PC it does not do this. I bought this Dell Alienware Aurora R14 PC with AMD Ryzen 9!! Right after I read that your PGA Tour game would not be available on PS4. So I am out nearly 2 grand on a cutting edge, liquid cooled, gaming PC, $92 on your game, $65 on a controller, and not even getting past the first hole at Augusta National.

Disappointment doesn't even come close to begin to describe how I feel right now. I remember when your company made some awesome games for SEGA Genesis. This was my first foray into your PC gaming platform for the 21st century and I am not impressed.

  • Hello,

I ended up replacing the entire PC. Dell put in a different GPU in the replacement. A Radeon 6700 12GB. No issues whatsoever.

    Try the following steps:

You can check your hardware temperatures with an app like Piriform Speccy.

    Thanks.

  • Hello Barry,

I did exactly what you mentioned in your previous post. I'll give you a bit of background info on my PC skills. I have an Associates on Electronics Engineering so I consider my PC skills slightly above average and I can follow instructions to the letter:

    Try the following steps:

    • Download and install any available updates from the Alienware website: [ Done ]
    • Download and install all available Windows Updates: [Done]
    • Run System File Checker to ensure the integrity of your Windows System files: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
    • [Done]
    • Perform a clean boot before starting the game: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135 or http://help.ea.com/en/article/how-to-clean-boot-your-pc/
    • [Done]
    • The results were: SFC was ran and some corrupted files were found and repaired. Tried running the game again and the PC shut down after getting to the start of the clubhouse and the announcers. Then performed a clean boot: This time I got to the tee box on Augusta Number 1 and then the PC shut down. Then put everything back the way it was and I got to finish Augusta Number 1 (bogey BTW, not bad for my first try with a new X-Box controller). Then, you guessed it, the PC shut down again.

Fortunately the Alienware PC is not the only computer in the house so I can follow instructions from my laptop while working on the Alienware PC. I did run an (MSinfo3232.exe) and have attached it here. Perhaps it will help. I really want to like this game, but I am running out of options here.

Surfing the web, watching YouTube videos, streaming on all platforms are not a problem.

Just playing this game is. Also, it's the only game I have right now on the Alienware PC. I have not downloaded any others for fear it may be the same thing.

I very much would appreciate any support you can send my way.

    Regards,

    Luis Munoz (PinarelloFP3)

    @PinarelloFP3 Luis,
It does appear from the file you uploaded that you have more than the recommended spec to run this game. What video resolution are you attempting to use and have you tried using a lower resolution to see if you get any different results? It might clue you in to which component on your machine is causing the shutdown.
  • cdmattax,

Thank you for your kind reply! I have determined that it is not a software issue. I downloaded and installed another golf game from 2K Sports which I already have on my PS4. I thought for sure it would run and not shut down the Alienware. But alas, it was not to be. The same exact thing happened! So the issue must be with the GPU, even though the pertinent tests showed no issue. The machine can run YouTube videos for hours on end, I can have multiple large files downloading, while streaming Netflix and I can't get the thing to replicate the issue. But if I do as much as try to get past the first hole at Augusta with nothing else running in the background....BAM!! You are a NO-GO at this station!!

After my previous post I went on the phone with Dell Tech Support. They went as far as resetting the entire Windows software to no avail. I deleted and downloaded the game yet again (third time today downloading 45 MB!!) and still no joy. I just unboxed and started up the PC this past Saturday 4/22/23. So after spending the entire day trying to get this to work, I am going to demand a replacement unit. I am not going to continue messing with it, I just want it replaced.

If by some astronomically improbable fluke the replacement unit behaves the same way, that will be the end for Dell and me.

@PinarelloFP3 Sounds like you are on the right track with the replacement. When you get the replacement, I would be interested in knowing the outcome as I am interested in how good Dell equipment and service is. I hope you just got a one off with your first system.
  • Hello again cdmattax,

Today around 0800 CDT (8:00 AM for the civilian types out there) I received a call from Dell Tech Support all the way from India. It was the same kind-hearted young lady who worked with me all day yesterday on the issue. After I replied to you yesterday, I emailed Dell Customer Service and stated my desire to have the machine replaced. She was very apologetic and showed sincere empathy for my situation. She also did not try to get me to fix the machine but went ahead and authorized the complete replacement. I mentioned that I did not want the same GPU and she assured me that I would get the opportunity to re-edit my build before it goes into production.

After more investigating on this issue, I found out that the GPU that I ordered with this machine has a notorious reputation for shutting down and crashing while gaming. My fellow gamers, I urge you to stay away from this GPU:

    AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8GB GDDR6

A search on the web about this GPU crashing games revealed that it has a pervasive reputation for not working properly along with a very finicky driver and crappy internal operating software. AMD is clearly aware of this and yet has done nothing to fix it. For a nearly $300 GPU, this thing should be making my coffee in the morning!!

Hi, How did you get on with the PC?

I come across this post as i am having the same issue, but only with 2 EA games, FIFA23 & PGA Tour. All other games run fine. I have a AMD 6900 XT and was unsure if it was that or my CPU Ryzen 5800X 3D.

As soon as i get the cinematics the PC just turns off.

    Anyone have any ideas.

Yes i have tried updating drivers etc as mentioned above.
