Putting Read Lines broken in latest update?

Is anyone else noticing that the putt read lines are absolutely atrocious since the latest update. Now by no means am I a PGA tour level putt reader, but the lines I get sometimes are absolutely not close to what they should be and just become a distraction when I try to read a putt on my own.

Don’t know if it’s been discussed, but I had 3 putts in a row that the “AI” read that were absolutely awful at Augusta, and lost by two strokes because of it.

If you are talking about the line that shows you how to expect the ball to break... I never use it. But I have always said this is a gauge rather than an absolute representation of the break. That it is basically the caddie making a read for you.

As you know putting is closely tied to putting speed so this line is best used as a gauge only. I turned it off right away when I got the game. But was forced to use it when I played Daily tournaments to earn some VC early on. I found it useful... but not always accurate.

@ELF014 my "arcade and pro" putt line is about 90% off, rarely do i hit a "perfect" putt that goes in.
i cant stand the line anyway, takes away the challenge of putting

Which is why I turn mine off. I play now with everything I can disable, disabled. The only thing is we alternate PRIVATE matches where we will enable the green grids every other game. We have someone complaining putting without the grid is a guessing game... I'm not sure he isn't wrong. It appears I'm just a better guesser.

But in the early days when I was playing the Dailies... I thought the putting line was pretty goid for the longer putts if you used it in conjunction with the putt meter. The short putts were terrible because the game wanted you to have the ball die as it dropped in the cup.

The same thing causing the AI short putting issues. Within 5 feet the line should be hit firmer and straighter.

I keep wondering how much golf do the people making the decisions in this game play or comprehend. They really need a PGA player on staff to oversee things who has an interest in creating a full realistic experience. And maybe an experinced gamer that can exploit the mechanics of the game to ensure there is a level of challenge for all players.

  • Put lines are never accurate, and they can't be:

Do you know what speed/distance the ai used to calculate that line? No? Me neither...

I don't think the putt line was ever to supposed to be a perfect represntation of the shot. But it could be, and it would consistent with the rest of the game (a bit broken).

But to answer your question... of speed/distance, I think the OP expects the ball to travel on that line if you hit the mark on the putting meter. Not that I use either.

I have played several golf games that as long as you hit the right speed and direction and distance they follow the line and drop. Now the really bowed lines are more difficult but can be managed. This game has some bad lines some times like a 45 degree angle on a one foot putt where it should be 5 degrees. Just saying.

I fully agree with you. The reason is because the developers programmed every putt to die at the hole. Inside a few feet most of us of us in real life will take the break out and just hit the ball firmer.

EA should have done the same for short putts that show substantial break, especially for the AI.

And has anyone ever seen an AI hit a pick shot out of the bunker? I have never played one because it extends my playing time. But from what I have seen all they every do is blast well past the hole.

The mark on the putting meter is just one part of the equation though: you move the marker further forward and hit the mark and your ball still travels faster / further with a different trajectory.

That's why, as you said, some lines are shown with a substantial higher arch than necessary - you hit the ball somewhat firmer and straighten out the arch.

We can't say for sure what "distance marker settings" the ai uses, hence we can't follow the line 1:1 in most cases - doesn't mean it couldn't be followed in theory.

Either way, just looking at the line as a guide and not seeing it as a definitive "aim here" is a healthy approach to this.
