That half shot is kind of there, it's called the Finesse in this game. There's something like a 50 yds gap you can chose from for a 8 iron.

@Katybee_1313 I know how to play, I'm sick of playing a "finesse shot" all the time when that shot has way more roll that an approach does

Now I get what you are talking about. For 9I or above, I don’t see any issues on roll with Finesse Shot. However, if I use a Finesse shot using a PW or any wedge, I see more roll and backspin. I play Xbox Series X and I am a 3-clicker. Fixing the physics on roll and backspin is necessary since they can get exaggerated and unrealistic.

@PalomaMarvel24 yeah I've had finesse wedges roll upwards of 100 feet before, say pin is on the front of a green, ball hits way post the hole and rolls all the way back and sometimes off the green, (take the long long par 5 on torrey pines can remember the number hole, but ive had balls roll 30-50 YARDS off the green hitting in the back) way to much spin, not even close to being realistic

You guys shouldn’t be seeing more backspin with finesse.  Finesse shots in this game spin less and roll out more than approaches.  This is why they are great into greens that slope toward you and when the wind is against you. Approaches on the other hand have more spin and are great into greens that slope away from you and when the wind is with you or if you are using a longer club  (7i+).

Personally I found that the finesse shot were more there to fill the distances between clubs. Albeit was a touch less spin.

But then I have always argued I don't understand the ball/swing mechanics of this game. I have seen shots land and spin 30 feet back up a hill. And then from the same distance with the same club on the next hole stick on a green sloping back to me where you expect the ball to feed back down the hill.

I have hit perfect shots with a +/- 0 go 10 or more yards short or the same distance long, from a flat lie with no noticeable elevation change. I can only guess RNG has some factor in it but these shots are well outside the displayed circle.

Though playable the game feels broken... I wish I could disable all the aids in the game. It would be less frustrating not knowing I executed a goid shot with poor results or that a well executed shot landed so far outside the dispersion circle.

  • One of the things that has always bothered me about the game is the natural backspin that the game puts into the skills tree. It takes a part of the game away from us and places it in the hands of the AI. Bringing the ball in lower, using the knock down, and pushing sharper on the downswing seems to have some effect, but there are certain courses where the backspin seems to be more pronounced than others. Banff for example. Even with all the tried techniques the ball has a mind of its own sometimes. It would be nice if natural spin could be turned off (never a fan of removing things, everyone should have the option to play the way they want) and have the option of whether we want to place back spin or have the ball move forward more on landing. We need a little more leeway on how high or low we want to hit. 2k has a much wider variance on both. Also there longer irons and woods don't roll out as much as EA's.

I also wouldn't mind if they made it harder to execute shots like flops, sand shots, etc. As long as they don't mess too much with the swing tempo.

I had to laugh today. I had two shots from the rough where my caddie selected the 'hack' shot. I switched to a regular approach and the percentage was 98%. I have only seen a few holes (Bay Hill and Pebble have a couple each) where the rough percentage is in the red and you have to lay up out of it. I am probably going to go into my skills and remove the points from the hack and redistribute them. I never use it, even when the rough is tough, just for a more realistic experience.

Finesse is most definitely a backspin reducer shot, especially since it allows you to club up.  There are several greens with flag placements that are impossible to hold with normal approach shots due to backspiin of the wedges below PW. Usually these greens are two tiered and have only a few yards to work with after the pin. If you hit an approach so that the ball lands on the green on these,  it’s natural spin will back it up off the tier of the flag and drop it right back down the severe downslope 40-50 feet away from the pin.   Usually you can use a finesse shot and club up to a Pw or 9i, play it low and leave the ball deadened next to the pin.
