Re: Simulation needs to be added to competetive

@ELF014 Im starting to play alot more 2k again... I think ea pga has alot of potential, and I'll keep playing the hell out of it.. but it has 2 frustrating issues for me with the cup and rough physics and rough lie penalties. They also can't even model the proper animation for flop and splash shots... I don't see this talked about much but ea did a terrible job there. In real life you change your stance and open the face of the club to play those shots... In this game the guy just hits a pitch shot and the ball magically flies high like a flop shot lol, very lazy and immersion breaking. Splash or blast shot (as they call it in this game) are equally poorly animated. 2k does a fine job replicating the animation for these shots as in real life... They just need to slow the swing down. Even full shots are about 10 to 20 percent to fast imo

I was pretty dedicated to this game because it addresses an issue in 2K that make it seem unrealistic to me. After they changed the swing speed starting in 2K21 it no longer felt like golf to me.

I felt the ball and cup physics were realistic feeling... I just no longer enjoyed the process of hitting shots. I could shoot low scores, but it was because I was able to adapt, not because the swing felt right.

The swing feels far to fast to emulate what it feels like to make a partial swing, a pitch shot or a chip. At least that's not how it feels when I make shots in real life. I fully agree the speed of the swing should be slowed down, maybe up to 25% of what it currently is. In fact I would like to see what the swing would look like if it started slower and was quicker as it approached the top of the swing.

I also agree with your statement about the animations.

I rather they do away with shot types... that instead the game allowed you to adjust your players stance. Allowing you to open and close your stance to promote draw and fade, the ability to move the ball forward or back in your stance to add a little loft or deloft the ball and trap it.

That depending whether you a right orcleft handed you could fully open your stance to hit a flop or splash shot.

And with each adjustment away from the base shot the timing would become more critical to execute a good shot. The timing could be disabled for AMATEUR levels and increased for each difficulty level.

They could use the shot arc to show beginning players the effect of each change in the players stance. This would open up a full palette of shots for playing the game.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of 2K... and if they addressed the swing speed in 2K I would be back playing it pretty much full time.

It is funny you are mentioning this at this time. My regular group just started playing 2K again this week and despite the poor swing speed. We had been exclusively playing EA since it released.

The consensus is that 2K is the far superior game as far as a true golfing experience is concerned. I fear we will only be playing EA on the rare occasion moving forward.

If it wasn't for the green speeds on 2K2019, that could have been the game of choice.

  • @ELF014 Yeah allowing one to fully change their stance would be an interesting way to play golf games, one that I personally would appreciate. It would allow players to hit any shot they like by just changing the players setup at address... I think ea got a bit gimmicky with all these shot types... If you want to hit a stinger in 2k then you lower the loft of your shot and reduce spin... i.e hold L1 and push both sticks up fully. You don't need an extra shot type called a stinger lol, same with bump and run shots, spinners and so forth... 2k does a much better job by letting you play all these shots ea has by simply changing club angle and loft and so forth... Add spin that way, not all these silly shot types with their silly badges for each one
  • @ELF014 i will be playing both games in the future... I prefer 2k gameplay but I love EA's course list and licenses. I hope 2k can up their game graphically and get some big name major hosting courses for next year's release. EA has the majors licensed, but 2k could still get the courses...

I personally -really- dislike the 2k downswing timing, but their course list is stellar.  Not so much the official courses, but all the created content.  There are some amateurs out there creating content every bit as good as the official courses.

@ScoutHunterKing The course designer is a huge advantage for 2K allowing content providers to create course.

Of course not all courses are equal in the quailty of what is being created, but the ranking system and number of plays give you a pretty good idea in 2K.

Graphically I don't feel the drop off is too bad. It is about the gameplay that keeps it viable.

You can have the prettiest game out there and no one will play it... or something with good gameplay as simple as Pacman that will have people playing hours on end.

We are being sold a lot of flash and promises... I am looking for a lot more substance.

Marketing did a much better job with this game than their developers.

    I absolutely agree with you.

But I'm not sure what you mean about "DOWNSWING TIMING"? If you mean the SPEED of the swing or the actual timing component of the swing.

I actually like the timing component as it adds an additional level of complexity to the swing. And this an option you can disable in the game settings completely if you prefer.

But if you are referring to speed of the swing I fully concur.

And I am sure you are fully aware a lot of real courses are not label with their proper names.

There is a pretty good website out there that lists the best user created courses in the game. We used to play a different course every night for years... seldom did we return to a previous one because of the endless choices.

When I refer to downswing timing, I don’t mean the swing speed, but the timing aspect like on EA where you can be slow/fast.  On EA, by tweaking the swing speed on you toons profile, you can get to where a consistent swing is going to be under 1% slow/fast.  Since I use the slower speed setting, my personal swing is almost always slightly fast, which means I’ll have a slight movement  from right to left.  I factor than in on my aim.

On 2k I was never able to get it consistent no matter what I did, including calibrating the dumb swing several times. Heck I even made a mouse macro on my Pc version to see if I could get the darn thing consistent…. No dice.   To make matters worse, on 2k the impact of being slow/fast is far worse than on EA, even resulting in complete shanked balls.  I ended up turning it off, but honestly that  largely ruined the game for me because it’s required for public  competition.

I actually appreciate the timing in 2K, we play on the two higher levels. It introduces another layer of skill to execute a good shot. And it means you are not executing a perfect shot everytime you hit the ball.

I have mentioned this before, on hole 11 at Augusta I am always fearful of swinging a little to fast and pulling/hooking my shot into the lake with 2K. On EA that fear does not ever enter my mind.

I have played The Golf Club series long enough now that I can tell when I have swung the club a little too fast/slow or if my swing path is off line. In EA I still feel I don't have full control of my shots. The meter will show perfect timing and a dead straight swing path and yet the ball is off line.

I also assuming with timing disabled you can enjoy a round of golf in 2K. Playing at lower difficulty settings does reduce the sensitivity of the timing. You can always work you way up as you get a feel for it.
