RNG - Random Number Generator

I have seen a number of posts about RNG but unsure what it is?  I don't see it in the settings or did I miss it?  I am playing using a controller at Sim Level difficulty.

What I have noticed after playing the game off and on for about a month is that the trajectory of the ball flight unless you really exaggerate the movement of the stick to the right or left does not seem to be impacted at all by more subtle movements of the stick.  The stick movement only affects the power when the speed of the downswing is compared to the length of the backswing and the difference is negligible.

So does RNG mean that regardless of how you move the stick, there can be a random dispersion of your ball flight?  Is this supposed to simulate a "mishit"?

The gameplay really has to be tweaked so that the actions of players impacts shot results.

  • Moving the controller instead of the stick seems silly. It might solve your own issues with not being able to control the stick accurately, but it's not going to put the ball exactly where you aimed it - there's still some shot dispersion and variable wind direction to introduce a degree of variability out of your control.

I'm with Putt on this one, in that randomness seems to be almost (but not entirely) independent of your inputs. It's not clear how your swing determines shot dispersion. That might be because it truly is random, or it's because the game isn't giving us the right feedback to understand how the swing input determined the ball trajectory.

I think the latter is partly true. Something is being lost in the abstraction used to give swing feedback, leading to uncertainty about why two 'identical' shots lead to different outcomes - e.g., Putt's videos from 17th at Pebble.

For what it's worth, I think people are too quick to blame randomness for their own lack of understanding of the basic aiming mechanics and, consequently, think others are cheating to not be subjected to the same 'random' outcomes. Randomness is not the difference between the top and bottom of the leaderboards. It has a noticeable effect on almost every shot, but it's not that much.

Sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about when you say rotate your controller to execute a shot.

I play under SIM plus more settings disabled and score just fine.

RNG really only rears it's ugly head if you go into the over swing area. If you stay under a fullswing the ball usually goes where it is aimed, based on the controller input.

My problem with the RNG is that it goes randomly where ever it wants... it doesn't appear to be tied to user input.

Yeah, like @SlimDown57 mentioned, it's a lot easier to get perfect / perfect on 3-click, specially on Arcade. A lot of those players complained and left in frustration because the ball is going so offline to where they aimed, going in the rough or hitting a tree out of the way.

I am one of those 3-clickers who have hit a tree with a perfect-perfect shot. In Cardi Creek (aka Wolf Creek), my ball went back to the original position after a perfect-perfect shot due to RNG and excessive backspin. That looks likes a group of defenders tackling a running back behind the line of scrimmage.

@ELF014 I’d say RNG happens under 100% swing too. I played Augusta the other night and on the 18th tee, I put a straight swing with 3% underswing on the shot and  it launched a good 8-10 degrees right of where it was aimed. On the flip side, I had straight swings that were up to around 1% overswing that launched straighter. This is with a stock golfer with no upgrades or specs. I would suggest RNG gets greater throughout the entire swing with a jump in possible RNG once you hit the overswing

and EA think this represents actual golf 😆

When I say underswing I mean not taking the swing to the top of the swing arc. When I stopped doing that it greatly reduced the RNG I saw and any misses I could account for.

I agree the game is terrible, I don't even play it anymore.. except to check any updates. Always hopeful...the potential is there, the execution not so much.

This forum has just become a point of interest to get caught up with any new events.

What is weird is that he's constantly complaining about cheaters and RNG. And it looks like EA has added RNG to made it more difficult for those straight shooters cheaters he seems to hate so much.
