However, there has been no update since october (see screenshot) so nothing has been solved...
I tried to play arena again after your message, and the game crashed again.
Looking at all the most recent reviews on the Google Play Store you will see a lot of players are experiencing this, even with the lastest phones and latest updates.
I do hope devs will finally do something.

Also, in which Arena are you experiencing this? Does it have a specific number?
Found the issue! Apparently, the last update is not compatible with French language. I switched my Android settings from French to English U.S. and "voilà", levels with score (e.g. Arena, some of Penny's level) don't freeze anymore.
Of course, it's only a workaround. It would be best if the program were compatible with non-English language.

I have the same issue since last update of PVZ2 on iPhone 13 pro Max with the last ios version.
We are a lot iof players in France experiencing the issue. You can check in the French forum. Lots of posts and lots of angry people there !
After the update, U was inable to play the Arena and the level 3 of Penny's pursuit. It was freezing totally and I had to force exiting the game.
Now for about 2 weeks, all the dynamic text of the buttons are missing and instead I can see "missing..."

Even though changing the language works (most of the time) it's incredible that players have to troubleshoot and find a "solution" by themselves while devs release a new update for Christmas times... and still don't fix the issue.
Now we have to change the language of our phones everytime we want to play a game e__e
