I have seen a few more posts on this bug from the sub reddit site and I fear the problem might be data issue from the server side as it is common so can affect a number of players.
(maybe we should ask for the geographic location all players experiencing this issue and see if there is any connections)

I logged it as an issue with EA and got this response:
"You've mentioned that you lost the game progress. This should not have happened. Please be assured, I will try to provide you the best assistance.
I like to inform you that we're facing some technical difficulty with our game tools. Please contact us back after sometime. We will be happy to help you."
AND ... after getting this message I opened PvZ2 again, and now the ENTIRE GAME HAS BEEN RESET. So I have lost absolutely ALL of my progress!
So, it looks like the EA helpdesk person tried to restore my progress BUT reset my account instead!
I'm in Australia if that helps the the geographic location theory.
I figure all I can do now is wait for them to hopefully fix it.

You could try recovering your account by EA's email registration scheme, if there's an uncorrupted backup in the servers you might get lucky, otherwise it's back to EA HELP.
Having done something to your account they will now assume that it's been fixed so they will probably close your case unless you tell them otherwise.

- 6 years ago@MAGICDAVESHROOM I have contacted them but instead of fixing my lost items all they did was recover my other old accounts i deleted a long time ago. Im still waiting for them to fix my main account ☹️

- 6 years ago@MAGICDAVESHROOM I did tell them that. Waiting for an answer. Tbh if this problem is not fixed, I have no more motivation to play this game again. I have invested to much time in it....

I would appreciate your understanding patience for the same.

@LandLordSnr FYI, I ask one of the player who also experienced this issue on sub reddit and it may be coincidence he is also from Australia and had noticed this about 16 hours ago.

@Saeed_blover I think you really need to find a better translation app, I think I get your meaning because I aware you use an English translator but others may see this statement differently for it has contradictory meaning.
The correct translation should have been:
You have to be persistent and annoy the EA like I did (to get what you want)
