I think the mechanic is correct that it drags zombies to the newest planted spikes.
I have a method to cause it drags to the right, this is done by digging up the spikes at C9 and C8 before placing the mint. Works for me but be warned it is a vigorous finger excise (I only managed to play one game then it took me hours to rest afterwards), this kind of strategy I guess is something that @PowerToss & @FantastiXxPVZ are extremely good at.
