I would go much further. I believe the entire concept of the Zen Garden is now redundant.
In the past (In the original P vs Z) we could use the garden to generate income for other game features by nurturing plants to maturity and then selling them. Alternatively we could plant lots of Marigolds to generate coins.
As things stand at present with the Zen Garden, it only produces boosted plants that can used for just one level. (Big deal). Those plants are also randomly selected, so we have no control over which ones we get. We also have to wait for several hours for any new plants to reach maturity. There is, of course, a facility 'Kindly' provided by EA to use gems to get an instant upgrade. However, as gems have now become vital in Battlez, I can't believe that many people would waste them on a one off boost that more often than not makes little or no difference while playing Adventure mode maps.
I can honestly say that the only occasions when I have used a plant that has been boosted in the Zen Garden have been purely by chance and because I just happened to select one of them.
As an illustration of how often I have used the Zen Garden in the past couple of years, I currently have a little under 10,000 sprouts available. As I rarely even visit the garden, much less make a point of using boosted plants in a load out, I fully expect that total will only to continue to grow.
I see no meaningful advantage whatsoever to retaining the Zen Garden, so why don't EA just get rid of it and put the space saved to better use? (While swapping any stocks of the redundant sprouts for something that would serve a useful purpose).
Perhaps, instead of showering us with useless sprouts, they could increase the coin drops proportionately.
Maybe they could even bring back the occasional gem drops that we used to have.
Oh! Wait! That's a non-starter as it would mean players not buying as many gems. Silly me!
(The above is just my personal opinion and I acknowledge that others may well disagree).
