1-2 Players on PvZ GW PS4?

I've got a new copy of PvZ Garden Warfare (the first one), I haven't unwrapped it yet because I'm only interested in playing it locally with my wife and I haven't been able to find a definitive answer as to whether that's possible. On the case it says "1-2 players", but what exactly does that mean for local multiplayer on a PS4 with or without PS+? Local co-op? Versus? Split screen? Or something else?
