A Beginner's Guide to Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville!

Hey everyone,

So you just bought Plants vs Zombies: Battle for Neighborville and you want to get familiar with the game and how it works? Or are you not very experienced with the game and would you like to learn more? Well, if so, you are in the right place! This guide I have here is aimed to help players who are new to the game (whether you have played the previous Garden Warfare shooters or not is not an issue). This game is a sequel and spinoff of the Garden Warfare series.

In this guide, I am going to cover the basics of this game, including the Giddy Park hub and its main features, the Multiplayer Portal (which is how to get into Multiplayer games) and how you can access your free-roam regions, which allows you to complete quests and chill. Hopefully, if you have just bought the game, you will enjoy it, there are no future content updates planned.

Giddy Park

Giddy Park is the main hub in this game. There is a Plant area (Dave Manor), a Zombie area (Zomboss HQ) and Giddy Park itself, where you can ride on rides and battle enemies. It contains lots of features which are available in the Plant and Zombie area, such as:

  • Rux, a "black merchant" where you can buy lots of items from.

  • XP Machine, a machine where you can automatically gain lots of XP for specific characters from in exchange for Coins. There is a limit to how many times you can use this per day.

  • Reward-O-Tron, a machine where you spend Coins on in order to gain some cool and unique cosmetics, but they do not provide a competitive advantage.

  • Prize Map, where you can spend Prize Bulbs on to gain limited-time and more unique items each month.

  • Promotion Booth, where you can promote your characters after they are Level 10, level them up again, and unlock new character upgrades. However, once you have levelled up characters enough, they will be maxed and you will be unable to continue levelling them up again, but you can still play that character.

  • Target Range, where you can practice with your aim and shoot down targets, as well as earn small amounts of XP.

  • Changing Booth, where you can change your current characters, as well as swapping teams, customising your characters, equipping upgrades and more.

  • Multiplayer Portal and the Monitor, where you can select modes to play with other players or in Private Play with Al, and then jump in and start playing.

  • Access to Free-Roam Regions, 2 is located in each Faction's base, you just need to interact with the specific characters first and they can take you there if you wish.

  • Join Plants and Zombies area, where you can conveniently and quickly switch teams, and swap between the Dave Manor and Zomboss HQ area.

  • Major Sweetie, only available at Dave Manor, where you can interact with her and complete a tutorial to help you understand the game more.

There are some other cool things that you can do while in Giddy Park, for example, go on some rides. There are ramps in each base which takes you down to the Giddy Park area. There is a globe where you are able to change your settings, you can play in a Private lobby with or without Al, or Public which puts you in a lobby with other players.

Upgrade System and Customisations

In the customisation booth, which you can access from the Plant area, Zombie area, by respawning, or before joining a Multiplayer or Private Play game, you are able to equip upgrades, to boost your characters' power, and Customisations, which allow you to change the look of your character, as much and as often as you want. You must equip upgrades and Customisations yourself in order to get their benefits. You can unequip these upgrades and Customisations at any time in the customisation booth. By levelling up and promoting your characters, you get access to more cool and unique character upgrades, so try out an upgrade if you like the sound of it, or if you would simply like to try out more upgrades. You use the customisation booth in order to select the character that you want to play as well.

To get more information on the Upgrade System and Customisations, read this post I made: https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/A-Beginner-s-Guide-to-Character-Upgrades-and-the-Upgrade-System/m-p/9462077/highlight/true#M26730

Accessing Multiplayer!

You may access the Multiplayer mode at any time, where you are able to play with other players or privately with Al, using the Multiplayer Terminal in Giddy Park. In each base, there is a large portal with a monitor in front of it, which is the Multiplayer Terminal. Simply interact with it and you will be able to select your Multiplayer or Private Play mode. You can pick from a range of different modes. Sometimes these modes change, so keep an eye on your game mode options. Battle Arena is a difficult mode which sometimes appears in the Multiplayer Terminal. You should get more experienced with the game first, or try this mode in Private Play first. You may also change regions here if you would like to play in a different region, however by default, the game should be set to your local region.

Accessing your Free-Roam Regions!

You can access your free-roam regions at anytime from Giddy Park. There are a total of 4 free-roam regions that are accessible, 2 for each faction (Plants and Zombies). There are loads of things you can do in your free-roam regions and you can have lots of fun doing so. These free-roam regions are the main story mode of the game, there are many activities to complete in each of these regions as well, such as a Story Mode, Medals, Collectibles and much more, which can keep you entertained for long periods of time (perhaps something you can do if you get bored). You can use these free-roam regions to battle Al, complete challenges, have fun, play Ops, and do much more. There are lots of possibilities.

To get more information on these free-roam regions, read this post I made: https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/A-Beginner-s-Guide-to-the-Free-Roam-Regions/m-p/9385479#M24946

Conclusion

Hopefully, this guide will assist you in getting started on this game and give you a grasp of how the game works. If you have played a previous PvZ Garden Warfare shooter, but not this game, then you should have a bit of an idea of what is going on and how the game works, but this game is still quite different to the GW games, so it could take you a bit of time to get used to this game. I have made several guides on this game, you can check out this list of guides that I have made here at: https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion/Guides-Tips-and-Tricks-for-Plants-vs-Zombies-Battle-for/m-p/9378426#M24725

Enjoy your gaming!

@TheSprinter85 Thank you for making this guide! That shady gnome is really annoying, though. The tutorial from Major Sweetie says his shop is the place where you would get "presents". They don't even mention he sells customizations at outrages prices!
  • Outrages prices? i buy things from rux occasionally i personally don't hate the idea of a "Fortnite item shop" in BFN.. but that's me lol

@WaterThornz While I personally wouldn't mind such an in-game shop, it felt weird because it is in a paid title. I know many full price titles do it, but I only tolerate them in free to play games.
I would have been fine with Rux being in BfN, but he sold content that was available for free in the prize map at the same time. That's why I said outrageous prices.
  • yeah, i guess it can be seen as weird, i just find the skins worth the 1k rainbow stars, if you enjoy the game and want the skin, in my opinion its worth it! but i can see it making more sense in a F2P title.. but i don't hate how they executed it, i guess they could of gave more free stars? but still, i understand where you're coming from.

I feel that Rux should sell some items for Coins, rather than selling everything for Rainbow Stars. I think EA’s aim was to make players unable to obtain everything from Rux unless you buy Rainbow Stars with cold hard cash. Which does not sound too bad to  me except that I think they went a bit too overboard with it. So many items, so little Rainbow Stars, and to think that we are having the opposite problem with Coins. GW2 never had this issue, I feel that this game should either have been free to play or make it possible to obtain everything without cold hard cash, but it would take lots of grind (but you would still have the option to pay with cold hard cash if you wanted, but the prices would be significant, a lot of money would be made off significant players though).
