A current assessment of BfN

Firstly, I'm still enjoying the game. I still feel that it has a ways to go catch up to GW2, but as we've said before, the potential is massive, especially once we get more characters, maps, and the much awaited phase 3 for Ops. There's a few good and bad points I wanted to bring up based on where we are today.

Before getting to the list, and while I'm still not 100% behind the Rux store when the reward-o-tron lies empty, the new zombie costumes for Imp, Electric Slide, and Foot Soldier, are all excellent, especially the ES Valkyrie skin! The Sunflower one is good too but not as nice as the excellent zombie outfits and the Imp's mech skin (i'm hoping that the first legendary Imp upgrade will be a different type of mech, much like the different mechs we had in GW2).

The list:

  • Ops still need work. Adding the elite hypno-flower was a good thing to be sure, but they lack flavor (no backup dancers for Disco zombie or vampire zombies for Baron Von Bats as 2 obvious examples). We've heard about phase 3 ops and the info I've seen is extremely promising, but until we get more, Ops are fun but not as interesting or exciting as they were in GW2.
  • Some weekly challenges need to be changed. Overall, these have gotten a lot better, and I have to commend the team for how they are usually much better than they were at first, but the boss TT ones need to be looked at, at the very least. I would add that I think the mechanics for boss TT need to be looked at in general.
  • Giddy Park is still not as good as the Backyard Battleground. I also already miss the gnome stealing our luck, and I'm sure many others do too. The exploit that certain characters use to spawn camp need to be fixed, the spawns should be impossible to camp or at the very least, defended by AI bosses, pots, bots, and more than just the wildflowers and TV head zombies. The events for finding chests and coins aren't bad, but they aren't enough.
  • Coins and regional currencies need to be more useful long-term. For new players and players that don't play that often, this isn't a big deal, but for many of us, coins, tacos, sheriff stars, and marshmallows become worthless. The fact that this has been the case for months is a glaring problem. I don't mind the lack of a sticker shop as once you had everything you got far too many self-revives and team retries, but let these earned currencies be worth something; the number one idea the community has is to let us purchase rainbow stars with coins, and that's likely the best bet, but there's also putting some of these Rux items in the reward-o-tron (which should be restocked and just sitting there empty for so long), and I'm sure there are other ideas for coins. As for regional currencies, let us exchange them for rainbow stars or something else as well (like add more free roam zone items we can acquire with those currencies).
  • A few bugs and issues persist and need to be quashed. The melee hit registration is the number one issue I encounter with any regularity, making Chomper and Super Brainz less fun to play when you literally see damage numbers pop up, yet the target took no damage. There are other hit registration issues as well (and based on feedback from many folks here, especially @spIash_damage 's videos), it appears worse on console than PC, but melee hits not working is easily noticeable and repeatable. Other issues include the Cacti/Deadbeard zoom in but fire the close range weapon bug, mechs going up inclines, the controller deadzone I've seen people mention, weird mouse aiming issues when zoomed in at times, and general lag/operation issues that have improved but I see people still having.
  • Customizations are amazing in BfN: Some of them are less exciting than others, but some of these costumes/pieces are simply stunning. Little touches like the animated camera on the Soldier's Total Totalinator outfit, the way the fishing hat for the Peashooter moves while you battle, the regional outfits like the mouse/elephant look for the Acorn and Oak, and so on are brilliant. It's nice not getting gold/gemmed/diamond, etc. versions of so many pieces and getting more brand new pieces and outfits instead.
  • 3 slots per character is insufficient. I'm still glad that after GW2's lack of any slots beyond the first on, and that game's poor UI for selecting customizations; that BfN gives us 3 slots and makes changing customizations so much easier, but 3 slots isn't going to cut it with all the costume options and now legendary upgrade options we have! Extra slots could be sold at Rux, something to spend our coins on, or a reward for grandmaster ranks that otherwise don't do a lot.
  • Victory slabs and punchers. I know, this isn't a high priority and it isn't for me either. That being said, getting extra slabs and punchers as much as we do feels so pointless. I wouldn't say this is something I'd focus on, but as I've mentioned a few times before, allowing us to customize these per character and/or slots, would at least give them some use. It's disappointing that there are many of these that are quite well done and funny, but only 1 slab and a max of 2 punchers being used means we can't really make use of these items. We don't see out own selections for obvious reasons, but at least someone would see them.
  • Wizard is quite fun. He also seems pretty well balanced (I'm not claiming he's perfectly balanced, but for a new character in a game like this, even if he needs some work it isn't that much). Excellent job here.
  • Plants need a new character soon. Now making a new character, especially one as different as the Wizard, the Space Cadet/station, and Oak/Acorn, isn't a small matter, but we've heard about the Berry Brigade and the Iceberg Lettuce for awhile now and I don't see it on the road map to June. The various other upcoming characters I've heard about are really exciting as I enjoy all these new characters a lot, but balancing the sides makes the game better, especially BA.
  • We need more maps for all modes. Major Sweetie's foreshadowing makes me think of a new map or maps, which we need and soon. One can never have enough maps! Preserve Pastures is my favorite TT map in BfN, but seeing even more new maps and one hopes for some of the old maps to return in one way or another, is a good thing for the game.

There are some other things of course; BA needs to be more inviting and ranked needs to be adjusted based on what I've seen, balance isn't as bad as it was but I've never seen a game of this type that didn't need some tweaking here and there (just avoid over-nerfing or over-buffing, and while Space Cadet is the closest thing I have to a main, I still feel the station is too good compared to Oak), I've been seeing decent lobbies on TT on PC but I still feel matches should be filled in with bots when they're low or unbalanced (like when a group of 4 friends leaves a side and it's 8 to 12), spice up the free roam zones with events and/or other things to unlock, and give us bot matches for all maps and mode.

With the shelter at home situation, I have no idea how much of the programming work for the game can be done from home by the team, so I expect things to update a little more slowly, but with people home more often and therefore having more free time, we want to see more stuff, more improvements, and more things to do in game.

Tl;DR: BfN is a fun game but it still needs work to reach the potential that I feel it has, but it's just not there yet. The team has a solid core here and there's a lot to love, but a few issues are holding it back.

  • Yep i agree with a lot of what you said and that the game has so much potential with all the leaks we heard. Overall great post that's all I wanted to say.

@Iron_Guard8  I do agree with all of your points. 😃

The victory slabs are awesome, but only being able to use one at once and having too many to choose from is an issue. Perhaps there should be an option to choose up to about 5 victory slabs and punchers at once, but the one your opponents see when they are vanquished by you is random. I really like how there are many victory slabs to choose from, but you're so limited to the amount you can have at once.

This Phase 3 of Ops seems like it will bring a lot of new Ops content. Ops lovers such as myself do not currently enjoy it as much as GW2's Ops, as there is a lot of lack in features in BfN's Ops compared to the GW2 Ops. I'm hoping that this Phase 3 will release soon, as it has been mentioned quite a while ago and we haven't heard anything particularly official regarding its release.

The coins and regional currencies issue is annoying, in GW2 we never really had a problem with having a lack of things to spend coins and rainbow stars on. In BfN we have nowhere near enough stuff to spend coins on. Same with prize bulbs for those players who quickly finish the prize map. Once you've used the Reward-O-Tron and emptied everything out, there's nothing left to use coins on, apart from the XP machine really if desired. Same with the regional currencies, you easily run out of stuff to spend them on, when it should be the polar opposite!

It looks like you've pointed out most of the issues players want addressed. I agree with all the other issues as well.

    Awesome post! 😃

  • Me too i love PvE but due to Ops lack content, im forced to play the terrible balance Turf Takeoverf. And YES, the same problem with Garden Warfare 2: Zombies are overpowered.

  • @Iron_Guard8 The game is in a good spot but needs plenty of work in the gameplay especially. From what I have seen, Phase 3 Ops looks very promising and I am very happy that Popcap is giving it more attention. It's probably the closest gamemode to the original PVZ, and I can't wait.
  • There's an odd cadence and imbalance to player engagement in the game right now IMHO. I'm referring to BFN as a whole, not TT matches or the like.

I'll start out the month with 50 prize bulbs which I'll spend as soon as the new prize bulb challenge is up. It will take me about a week to get all the prize bulbs and rewards. Then about another week or so to reach 50 more prize bulbs - and that's that for the prize bulbs for another two weeks.

Having completed all the PvE challenges and puzzles and emptied out the ROT. That leaves the weekly Rainbow Star challenges which if completed fast enough leaves another gap before the next one.  I'm not much for BA so I'll play TT and watch the prize bulbs evaporate as I play. I'll play to increase my character's rank but watching those prize bulbs disappear is frustrating. Then Maybe use coins to get some XP which  has a daily limit. Then I'll wonder away and play GW2 until the next prize bulb challenge.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that in GW2, even after you completed the PvE challenges and puzzles and even after you maxed all your characters you could still play for coins and get minions and costumes. And there were community challenges and the town hall. And yes there were gaps between them but you could still earn coins that you could spend.  You always were and still are rewarded for playing the game. I would think that one of the primary goals of any game is to make sure you have fun and keep playing and one of the best ways is to keep usable rewards coming through challenges and game play. But BFN is not doing that. To have currency that you can't use seems to me a huge lost opportunity to ensure "stickiness" and increases player frustration level (sorry the ROT  is empty but you can go over to Rux and spend real $$). And to see another player go to the ROT and get rewards and you can not? What are they thinking? And then Rux gives us free coins that we can't use? Wow. I understand this is a work in progress and I do like playing the game, but I just don't get it. I know the empty ROT and useless currency has been brought up before but I'm shocked that it's still going on and surprised the developers don't understand how negative it is to the overall experience of playing the game.

And of course I'm holding out hope that all the coins I've accumulated will be useful somewhere, sometime, somehow. Right.

  • I think if they start adding more content, balancing changes such as dropoff and make currencies useful BFN will become a much better game. I just compare it to GW2, and some things just feel empty.

  • I agree with the points that Iron_Guard8 has made here. I recently needed to give BFN a break because of all of the bugs, issues, and the lack of effort on the PopCap's part to address these things sooner. Regarding bugs and issues, I'll post the following link for anyone who's interested in knowing what bugs/issues are plaguing the game:
