Ability discussion: rocket jump and leap

Rocket jump and Rocket leap.

Rocket jump-default (gw and bfn)

Gw description: Soldier Zombies take to the rooftops! The Rocket Jump ability enables the Soldier Zombies to get to places other characters can't. That's one off his bucket list for sure!

Bfn description: Leap into the air.

Soldier leaps into the air by using the back end of his zpg to gain height while leaving a trail of smoke. 20 second recharge in both gw games but only 12 in bfn.

Has two upgrades.

Rocket leap:

Distance increased for Rocket Jump.

Liftoff:

Cause an explosion at launch when using Rocket Jump.

Using Rocket Jump causes an explosion with the following stats: (1.) 50 blast damage; (2.) 2.75m (9.02 ft) inner blast radius; (3.) 4m (13.12 ft) blast radius; (4.) 10 shockwave damage; (5.) 5m (16.4 ft) shockwave radius.

It's clearly inspired by the rocket jump of the soldier from team fortress although his rocket jumping is much more advanced.

Rocket leap-super rare

Gw description:

What it lacks in height, the Rocket Leap makes up for in distance. It's a giant leap forward in Zomboss technology!

Rather than going up soldier now jumps forward at high speeds but at a 30 second cooldown. He gets 2 uses and can use them in succession.

My favorite iteration of rocket jump is gw1. It allows you to go so high and feels so beefy to use. Gw2 feels nerfed in height but rocket leap is extremely satisfying to use unlike 1 although there are many areas where rocket jump is the only way to reach them in 2.

The bfn version feels wierd to use due to the fact it feels like a worse version of gw2's with worse camera movements. Now let me say I don't like the liftoff upgrade: how am I suppose to know when and how a foot soldier is carrying this? He just presses a button and I take damage; in team fortress soldier must aim down to rocket jump and he himself takes damage that can potentially kill him given that his own rockets can damage him.

  • BfN's rocket jump has been improved since Founders, but it still feels awkward to use; with the camera not following it properly, and just not as smooth as it was in GW and GW2.

I have long ago swapped to rocket leap, despite its loss of height. Having 2 charges is extremely useful and let's me get out of trouble or a Chomper's maw more often. I have a tendency to jump and then hit the leap to get to higher spots, but jump gets you higher which is why I didn't swap for a long time at first.

In the GW games, it's largely personal choice as to which you prefer. I don't feel either ability is bad or OP compared to the other.

@Iron_Guard8Rocket jump in 1 could get you over just about anything and rocket leap was ok but more of a movement option than anything.

Gw2 feels perfect for rocket leap with relatively fewer areas exclusive to jump and the chain jumps allow you cover a lot of ground without sacrificing much height.

The rocket jump in bfn was improved but it still doesn't feel that great and with bfn's lesser vertical importance to reach certain areas to begin with it feels pretty meh overall.
