Ability discussion: the bean bombs

Chili bean bomb, sombrero bean bomb, and dark bean bomb.

Chili bean bomb- default (gw&bfn)

Gw description: The Zombies often confuse the Chili Bean with Brainz, racing to eat it. It has a short fuse and deals massive damage to all nearby Zombies.

Bfn description:

Spit an explosive bean that detonates after a delay

.

Peashooter launches a red chili bean resembling the one from pvz2 that lasts 3 seconds before exploding. It warns enemies of it's presence by producing sparks and making a noise like haaaa ri before making a boom sound effect with a red mushroom cloud. It deals 175 damage in both gw games but has a 45 second cooldown. In Bfn the damage and radius was nerfed but the cooldown is 18 seconds and the chili bean glows to give itself away. In gw you could jump and run to make the bean go farther and faster or also push it around.

It has 2 upgrades. Pro spitter: Chili Bean Bomb travels further.

Chili Bean Bomb travels 50% further

.

Bean party:

Faster refresh time on Chili Bean Bomb when earning a vanquish with it.

Vanquishing an enemy with the Chili Bean Bomb speeds up its cooldown time by 3 seconds

.

Ai browncoat zombies will be attracted to and attack the bean.

In bfn the Peashooter will make a sound similar to Commando Pea's reload sound when using the ability.

Sombrero bean bomb-super rare

Gw description:

Nothing says "hot" like a Chili Bean wearing a sombrero! The fuse is quite long, but the damage is mighty impressive. Timing is the key with this fun friend

.

Peashooter launches a Bean bomb wearing a sombrero that shouts ariba upon exploding in an even bigger radius mushroom cloud. The bomb lasts 5 seconds before detonating and has a 30 second cooldown. Deals 250 damage.

It says "Ándale" when deployed, and before it explodes, it says "Arriba!" Come on and get up respectively. It leaves behind confetti when exploding. Can also say ta da before exploding.

Dark bean bomb-special

Gw2 description:

These Dark Bean Bombs come in pairs. Perfect when you toss out a Bean, and then immediately need to toss out another

!

Peashooter tosses a shadowy purple bean bomb that lasts 2 seconds but deals 80 dmaage with a smaller blast radius. It takes 35 seconds to recharge.

Beat bling maiden in a poll to be sold at rux.

Imo this is what imp punt should be. I love bean bomb in both gw games as an ability, although it is annoying getting biried by ten of them in gw1 due to the absurd amount of peashooters. My personal favorite is the sombrero bean bomb due to the blast radius.

It feels much worse to use in bfn however due to not being able to tech with it like the bean jumps of gw. Not too mention the blast radius feels far too small and inconsistent alongside many zombies having escape abilities alongside sprinting to easily get away.

  • They are a pain in GW with the constant spam on the points as you say. And also as you point out, despite how obnoxious they can be, Imp Punt is worse since there's no warning, whereas the bean bombs are pretty loud and even with dark bean bomb's shorter fuse you can get out if you're aware, and it does less damage as well.

I used to mostly use the sombrero bomb, and still do in GW, but in GW2 I usually the dark bean bombs for the flexibility.

BfN bean bomb is alright, but I prefer the GW/GW2 versions.

@Iron_Guard8 If bfn bean bomb was more consistent and could allow the use of techs i'd probably like it more.

The spam is annoying in gw but that doesn't mean I think its a op ability.
  • This will very much be kept in general terms despite the various subvariants of bomb effects found in BfN, as the damage inflicted, to a large extent, remains the same throughout all three PvZ games. However, despite the character variants mentioned, being true blood GW2 characters, the bombs' characteristics apply equally well to BfN.

Be that as it may. I find that the bomb to be used depends very much on both the game mode and the character variant.

    Re the various Game modes:

The Suburbination, Gnome Bomb and Turf Takeover modes present an ideal setting for the Sombrero bomb, as the time it takes for the fuse to set off the bomb is very often sufficient for seeing both zombies that have just been knocked out, and new recently joining zombie players hurrying back to the graveyard, being caught out by the delayed explosion.

Secondly. The mêlée struggles that converge around the Gnome Bomb, the Suburbination and to a lesser extent the Turf Takeover zones are also ideal for launching the bomb, as the fighting is often so intense that players (and that includes plants that wastefully set off a bomb) don't notice that a bomb has been launched.

    Re the character variants:

Whereas the Sombrero bomb is the perfect game-changer for those three game modes I find it of little use in the remaining modes.

In these fast and rapidly changing non-defensive modes, I use the Bean Bomb in medium to close-quarter fighting due to its short fuse delay. Particularly as a supplement when playing as Agent or Law Pea in melée fighting, as I find both characters (especially Law Pea) extremely difficult to use effectively at close quarters. The fuse delay is minimal and can often catch zombie players off guard

The Dark Bean Bomb pair (GW2) I don't find of much use and hardly ever use them. That said, I find them indispensable when playing as Ice Pea, as the damage inflicted on a zombie is not always enough to knock it out and a single bomb (or even two for the high heath zombies) is perfect for finishing off a zombie that has been slowed down or even frozen by the Ice Pea's freezing effect.
