10 years agoAfter 150 hours it's time to call it quits
It's been fun ...kind of
I've unlocked all the characters a week ago. Maxed all the ones I care to use. What's left to do? It should be pvp but I'll talk about that later. I'm not sure if collecting 6300+ stickers was designed to keep players around but if it was, it's the wrong approach, especially considering a large majority of them are recolors of skins.
A large majority of my time was spent in turf takeover. I've won many games as plants and zombies alike. That being said, defending is just way too easy once you know what you're doing especially for zombies.
Some of the older characters feel like just that, old. Take cactus for example and compare her to her zombie counterpart, deadbeard. Enough said.
Maps are just much to cluttered. I'm not sure why the team decided to take what worked in gw1 and flip it to its opposite. The maps in the first game were stellar. They made sense, they were fluid, there wasn't some random obstacle in your way on every turn. This poor map design is especially evident in Zomburbia. Out of the hundreds of games I've played on turf take over, this map is the worst of all. It's far too slanted for the zombies. There's too many houses to jump on top of and camp and even if you manage to hit a few of them off, they'll be right back up there after they spawn.
The general imbalance and Inconsisties of pvp is what really drove me away. People seem to think that if plants can win sometimes then the game is balanced. Ideally it should be 50\50 and I can tell you from experience that is simply not the case. Plants are very well designed. They all have their niche roles to fulfill which encourages team work and coordination while the zombies are just overloaded with versatility, eliminating the need for a balanced team comp. I'm noticing plants are finally catching on to stacking whatever the best class is in this case, corn. Every game now has 5-6 corns and why not? It's a great class and it's fun.
There is absolutely no team matchmaking system in place to balance teams. Which tells me they know a large portion of their players aren't all that concerned with competitiveness as they are with silly characters and sounds and a color saturated map to be silly in. In any competitive shooter, there needs to be a way to organize teams fairly so no side is stacked to high heaven. Adding a simple pvp leveling system aside from the regular levels would fix that, match people up based on experience.
The backyard was a nice feature and it is far better than sitting in a lobby. So props on that.
The game just kind of lost its charm. And that sucks because I had no intention of quiting anytime soon and I was kind of excited to collect all the stickers, especially since I almost have toxic brainz. But I can't wait around and play a horribly balanced game for 2 weeks in the hopes that they fix things little by little. And even if they do manage to achieve perfect character balance, which anyone knows is impossible, there's still the issue of maps and how easy it is to defend.
The worst part is that turf takeover is the best pvp mode. If you think the balance issues are bad, go play gnome bomber or vanquish, you'll quickly find out just how much better the zombies are. That is, if you can even find a match since those game modes are largely barren now.
Paragon gets released for early access on Friday. Looks like I'll be moving onto that game for the spring/summer.
