Announcer discussion: Crazy Dave

Crazy dave is the leader of the plant forces in the shooters. Due to the games changing artstyles he's had different designs and animations.

Gw1 quotes: "25 vanquishes left", "10 vanquishes to go!", "Hey, vanquish 50 zombies. "Time to get CRAAAZY", "Hurry my little sprouts! Grab that gnome bomb and blow up those tombstones.", " Scribbly lickings! You really messed up that tombstone", "Was busy eating off the floor but it sounded impressive.", " oh no the zombies are winning", and "The fog man cometh".

He even hops in his RV to take into combat with boss mode and drops supplies for plants across the field ranging from spotting stations, twin healing flowers, revives and cherry flowers.

Uses his head sprite from pvz 1 alongside the audio gibberish.

In gw2 dave recieved an entire character model that sadly was cut from appearing the garage where davebot 3000 now resides. This model is still seen in the backyard menu and his audio prompts where he has several animations such as being angry or sad upon losing gardens, joyful banter when the plants are winning, and an uncaring groan if zombies are winning.

Quotes: "I'm not a space wizard. Vanquish zombies to win", "Zombies reached 25. I made a paper hat", "You need help out there! Where is Crazy Dave?" " Old fashioned hamburgers. Vanquish those zombies", "Halfway there. Can i smell the winner?", "Put on my glitter gloves we are about to win!", " Dr zhangus is mean", " take those zones. Sweet sassy molassey", "Touchdown", "I'll shed a single tear", "Try again zombies. That wasn't even ours!"

In bfn dave was redesigned in the new artsyle with a fluffier beard and slighty more dented pot on his head. However he is a single image rather than being animated.

Quotes: " Halfway to victory or is it too quarters to victory?" Only 10 more to go. Ill put on my victory-dance leotard". "Clear this area so i fan set up my solar paneled sun lamp", "Don't let the zombies win. Heal pals and unhealed zombies", "Wowie kablooie! Do you teach winning lessons?", "Oh no. Fight back. Fight front. Fight sideways!".

Note that I can't get everyone of these.

In Gw2, he can sometimes be seen in person in his flying car when you are entering Ops mode.

He is known to hate cats in gw2 and a Bfn statue shows him being attacked by them.

In gw1 and 2 multiple wanted posters and insignias of him can be found for both teams. These posters reveal that he's 6ft,2.

I think I prefer gw1 dave the most. He seems way more aware of and invested in the situation and doesn't just say things that are random for the sake of it. I do like how he's animated in gw2 though and seems to generally care about somethings like dave bot 3000.

I actually like his Bfn redesign. The scruffier beard and pot fit well but why in tarnation isn't he animated, when he was animated he was better as displaying tone of voice since you saw if he was angry or sad. He also seems a bit less invested.

Overall he didn't change as badly as zomboss, although that is a completely different bag of worms that I want to punch in the face anytime I see him in Bfn.

  • I find some of the random things that Crazy Dave says to be really funny actually. I've wanted to see him properly appear in a shooter game, such as in the Backyard Battleground or a different hub. He seems quite fine to me in Battle for Neighborville, but his sense of humour has started to drop off from the previous shooters from my experience.

@TheSprinter85 Fair enough. There just has to be a good balance of normal alongside the wierd things. His humor has kinda dropped over time yet that could also go with the tone of each game changing.
  • I missed this one, so am late to reply.

I love how Crazy Dave is animated in GW2, and how his voice is a bit different too, although I like all 3 versions of him. Like @TheSprinter85 I actually love the weird random stuff he says in GW2 as it feels close to some of the special original PvZ interactions we had with him, and stuff like;'This one time, I lost a game of checkers to a sandwich!' always makes me grin.

Great character, more consistent than Zomboss (although reading Reddit comments, apparently Zomboss in BfN more closely matches him in the comics, which I haven't read), and one of the best things about PvZ in general; I want more Crazy Dave in a new shooter!

@Iron_Guard8The voice is different because gw1 used his pvz1/2 audio while gw2 is a gibberish combination of different languages.

On the whole zomboss being more like his comic counterpart: If they really want the games to be more in line with the comics than they need to go 100% or not at all because of all the things to pull from the comics zomboss' personality is one of the weaker aspects and it suffers from the aspect that if you never fead the comics it comes out of nowhere and you have no idea why just like mr stubbins who is an entirely random name in Bfn if you never read the comics, just like the pve region van looking like penny but never being used or acknowleded so it's only there for hardcore fans rather than normally introducing them to the casual audience (shame as she could make a nice announcer as a calculating straight man compared to Dave's more eccentric lines like have dave say something wierd than penny follows up with a translation like keep up the good work or something). I read some of the comics online but I never really cared that much about zomboss' personality. Making these callbacks or references only works if they have a reason to exist in the game otherwise it's the effect of memberberries.
