Announcer discussion: Dr. Zomboss

Dr Edgar George Zomboss is the leader of the undead horde overrunning suburbia

Gw1: He appears as his head sprite from pvz 1 and supports his troops from afar in a blimp in boss mode which supplies spotting, healing, revives, and cone strikes by metal boxes.

Owns a private estate which is a map.

Quotes: "Vanquish 50 Plants to win. The brains will be ours!", "Go my fearless zombies! Get that gnome bomb and destroy those gardens", "The plants need 25 more! We are losing this fight!", "CRUM! That tomstone was very precious to me", " Down goes another one of those ridiculous gardens", "NO, that was one of the first tombs i ever raised!", and "Your see! You see! I will lead us to victory!.

Gw2: Zomboss recieved a fully animated model that acts as announcer and appears in game. His new expressions range from a very happy and excited hand movements that literally cause his eyes to roll around in his head, anger to the point he screams and clenches his teeth, sadness where he appears to be crying when his troops are losing, and fear when he is scared of a powerful enemy force.

He contacted his future self to gain z mech assitance and actively monitors his elite troops although be claims to be too busy to meet the top zombie.

He shows up to deliver a speech to the zombie graduates if tbe defend the university.

Quotes: "Control all zones! Destroy all plants!" "PLANTS! THEY ARE PLANTS!", "Vanquish 50 plants. Trample over them!", "Plants are winning crank up the zing pow!", "They're about to win. Quit drooling", "How can this be? Fight smarters, "This is not the plan. Get it together!", " The impossible dream! I see it now!", "I am the baddest", "I HAVE ALL THE POWER!", "THAT'S IT! You're all grounded.", "They are halfway to stealing our victory."

He also appears on several monitors in gw2 as his old head sprite speaking in and even more distorted gibberish.

Bfn: He appears as a unanimated sprite much like dave with a new design.

Quotes: " Vanquish those plants! I command it. It is commanded.", "Push on. 25 more and you could win 1 minute of vacation time", "Well done. You make me look great. Like mirrors.", "Halfway there or half way not there. Fight harder.", " HAH! Nothing can stop how good in am at telling you to do stuff",  "You win 1 minute of me not yelling at you".

Once again I can't do all of these.

In both gw games he is sometimes displayed with an audio device on his chest according to popcap this is too explain his new linguistic capabilities in the boss mode trailer.

Owns many buisnesses seen throughout poster in gw.

Born in the year of the naked mole rat.

Had an ancestor that fell into lava.

Posters in gw2 indicate all the robotic eyes are actually cameras he uses to inspect his troops.

Gw zomboss is imo a much better leader. He actually seems to care about the zombies to an extent and actually tries telling them stuff rather than just needlessly insulting them.

His animations in gw2 really add to his charm even more than daves since his are more out there like his eyes rolling around in his head when he's to exicted. He's a little more egotistical but still seems to care about the zombies a bit.

In bfn he's just a piece of crap. He constantly berates the zombies and never really offers any useful advice. The Mr stubbins reference is nice but once again it's only there for the people who read the comics and is random for those who haven't read them so unless you know it just makes no sense who it is.

He's ego has been inflated to an exagerrated level that I actively get tired of playing zombie, especially since a lot of his lines keep repeating.

His plans also seem to ping pong as one moment he wants to transmit zombies into peoples tv to eat them and create tornadoes to shipwreck humans and then later he wants to put a tiny flag into space and is afraid of marshmallows. This really isn't the guy who commanded his army to stop cukes, release an ancient monarch to usher in a new ice age, and eclipse the sun.

I would rather follow the dummy cult unironically ngl.

His middle name being George isn't a reference to George Fan (pvz creator). George Fan simply thought it was a good middle name for an evil scientist.

  • I was disappointed that Crazy Dave and Zomboss backslided in BfN; losing their animations when even the quest NPCs in the backyard that gave us quests in GW2 were animated when talking with us. And yes, he could berate us a bit in GW and GW2, but not to the extremes he does in BfN. In the GW games you get that he actually cares, he even calls the plants monsters for attacking us in graveyard ops!

It's a minor thing to be sure, but part of why PvZ is so good is the attention to the minor and major things, so would love to have him back like he was in the GW games for the next game.

@Iron_Guard8 Yeah even the minor characters in gw2 quests had animated announcer portraits.

Another thing is that he seems dumbfounded when the plants are winning like he's genuinely confused that they are a match for his zombies showing that he has some competence in their abilities and severely undersells his opponents.

If they actually bothered to connect the games and explain that he grew harsher due to his previous losses than it could actually work if done well and would make sense but instead he just comes off as unlikeable for the sake of it since outside of a few minor references gw and Bfn might as well two different series entirely.

Gw1 and 2 really nailed a lot of the small details in game and it feels like bfn forgot to really put in the time for it imo.
  • Zomboss definetly seems like a strict and harsh boss! He's not that bad, not until Battle for Neighborville anyway, when I'm not sure the last time I heard something good from him. "If you win, you win a single day of vacation time" or something like that was probably the nicest thing he stated. I do like his personality, being harsh but giving praise where it is due, but once Battle for Neighborville comes out, all of this basically drops off (like you have already stated as well - I agree)!

@TheSprinter85 It's actually a minute of vacation time.

Ironic since in gw2 when zombies are massively winning he joyfully yells about promotions for everyone. Goes to show how much his character changed.
