Anyone know a good counter to Acorn?

(This is Console Feedback, but I'd still love to hear about everyone's opinion on Acorn anyways. This is also a rant I guess!)

Acorn has become a big issue for console players due to having a very small hit-box paired with constant jumping and some-what weak aim assist.
The main problem isn't the class itself in my opinion, its mostly the players that are very dedicated to the game that abuse how Acorn works.

Acorn's abilities are on a 10 second cooldown paired with a very small hit-box and can move very quickly, but the problem
I wanted to discuss is his harden ability he unlocks at 3 stars (Correct me if I'm wrong.)
Harden gives 50 max health to acorn which is very busted on console play due to the statements I've said above and some other things, don't know
if I'm the only person having these problems with hardcore Acorn mains. These players also rarely use Oak and mostly use them in cramped spots or control points.
The main issue here is that its harder to track an Acorn on Console play than Pc. I don't play Pc Bfn so I don't really know.

My main problem is: I don't know a good counter to Acorn, I've tried All-Star, Foot Soldier and Space Cadet, yet nothing is working out! Its just very difficult to track their movement paired with some-what delayed gun tracking that I've noticed. (Most projectiles from weapons don't hit where you aim at instantly.)

-All-Star would be a decent counter, but the tracking delay with his primary can be really shown when against Nightcap and Acorn players. I'd use Imp Punt, but it mostly never works.
Sprint tackle deals damage and is more easier to aim, but you still have to deal with 50 more health including Sap Traps and Acorn's primary.

-Foot Soldier is difficult to counter hardcore Acorn players because of the quick movement Acorns have paired with tracking delay. ZPG doesn't work unless you get really lucky as well.

-I thought Space Cadet would work out due to the homing projectiles and the lil_beam, but it doesn't  work well with close combat against a small acorn and slam just gets you into another tricky situation if they just sprint or use their mobility ability (Which is also another reason why most abilities struggle to kill these players.)

If anyone knows a good counter to these Acorn players I'd love to hear from you.

  • @Subzeroto  I would imagine that a hard counter to Acorn (and Nightcap) is 80s Action Hero, there's an upgrade called "Critical Tag" which would help even further, because acorn has a big critical hitbox, and if you hit him with any primary charge (does not have to be charged), then you will gain three tags on it, then you can simply use Can't Missile ability -.which heat seeks and should defeat him. His rocket ride does an INSANE amount of splash to him and can shred him and finally, his Dynamite Dodge covers some of the distance between you and him, while dealing a fair amount of damage to him if it hits. There are also other upgrades which can help further, I can list some if you would like!😇

  • For me it’s the Engineer.  Nobody likes getting hit for 37 consecutively.  Or even sporadically.  You might not win the first couple of fights but you will have planted the seed.  And probably gotten a shared on the one or both of the first fights.  They will stay clear of you eventually unless they are straight up targeting you.  That’s just with his primary.  His stun isn’t the greatest now but still help get through 3/4 of his health.  Try and bait him to your turret.  Most set it up in an obvious spot and spam primary.  If you know your going to engage with one, set it up around a corner prior.  Worst case is you regen health because he didn’t chase you.

    Hope this helps.

  • @Subzeroto 80s action hero. the huntsman upgrade and critical tag upgrade make quick work of acorns jumping around. you also have rocket ride and dynamite dodge if things go south. (dynamite dodge is only rly useful if you have leg day equipped - 1 point)
  • I just played for around 3-5 hours, most of it included acorn gameplay which I abused harshly and I have to say that countering acorn is a nightmare.
I've decided to keep track during this time and oh god im terrified of acorn:

-The amount of deaths I've had this entire playthrough was around 12  (Not per round.)

-Average kills per round was 34-49 (Which was my highest.)

The entire time I was playing TT and it was honestly pretty fun to play as acorn, his one counter I'd say is honestly Pirates.

The ideas you've shared (Thank you for responding by the way!) could work, but honestly as I was playing acorn the only times I'd die is if I overextended when on low health and got unlucky.

Every 80's action hero I've seen isn't really a threat, If they use their rocket ride you can just use your mobility ability to just leap to safety, the only time I've died to it was when I believed I was safe but got hit by it around a corner.

Engineer isn't a problem either, most players I've come across either missed their bullhorn or had already used it. If it did hit me I could just lunge away and fight back again.
Honestly speaking, Engineer can be a really good counter to acorn if played well, same with 80's with a sprinkle of luck.

I'll see if these counters work if I have the problem again.
(Also sorry if this is in the wrong place or something, I have no idea how replies work on these forums yet.)

  • @SubzerotoDon't worry, General Discussion is the right place for questions to / advice from other players.

Acorns are trickier now than they were but the others have all given great advice!
Other possibilities you could try are Electric Slide - the tornado covers a larger area & can be sent & set off in the direction you think they might dash to whilst you attack with your primary. (ADDED: failing that, bounce them away from you & let someone else deal with them!!!)
Or potentially even Scientist played offensively by getting in closer & warping after them - but I'd only recommend that if you're confident with him & the circumstances are right.

You might want to spend some time in Weirding Woods near the Z-Tech factory where there are a number of Acorns / Oaks & try out a few strategies and the battle chest there also has at least one game mode where you play against them.

    Good luck! 👍

@Subzeroto  There are other characters who are quite decent against acorn characters, because of different abilities which are effective upon them, such as:

    • Scientists can warp after them if they are running, and can heal themselves to prevent being vanquished by acorns.
    • Engineer has Heavy Helper which has Aimbot and can reduce Acorn's sprinting speed, and a speed pad to chase after the acorns, as well as a stun to lock them in place for a bit, great if you have good aim.
    • Foot soldier can be great if you can ZPG him directly (or with splash to weaken him), if you get the "Sticky" upgrade for his Stink Cloud and stick it to Acorn, he won't be able to see through the stink cloud and it will do damage over time yet you can see him.
    • All-Star can weaken him with Sprint Tackle and Imp Punt, and protect himself with his Dummy Shield while doing a lot of damage at once from any range with his primary weapon.
    • Imp can Gravity Grenade on him, forcing Acorn to use his dash. Imp can also Impkata the Acorn if at close range. The mech's missile madness can be great because of the splash and the Bionic Bash because of the high damage, or even the explosive escape, it has instakill potential.
    • Pirate can kill Acorn instantly with Barrel Blast, hunt him down with Parrot Pal, use Anchors Away to close the distance, or snipe him to weaken or vanquish him.
    • Super Brainz up close can quickly vanquish acorn, his punches do a lot of damage, especially if you have "Ultra Combo" upgrade equipped, the Hyper Jump Thump can close distance, Whirlwind keeps acorn close to you, and Super Ultra Ball can instakill him or do high splash damage.
    • Electric Slide can use Funky Bouncer to move him away, Outta Fight to retreat or get closer and Disco Tornado to detonate when he gets close. You can also use her primary to either stun him or do damage to him via electric chain lighting from attacking other plants.
    • 80s Action Hero's bow can do a lot of damage, Rocket Ride has a lot of splash and can quickly vanquish acorn, Dynamite Dodge to damage and get away or closer to acorn, or Can't Missile to vanquish him from homing.
    • Space Cadet's primary has aimbot. Will help if Acorn is running. The Gravity Smash is good for getting closer and doing high damage, the Big Bang Beam can do a lot of damage as well. The Station can use the Crater Maker or its primary to deal damage as well.

This list assumes you are battling an acorn with the "Hardened" upgrade!

Hope this helps you as well!

  • @SubzerotoI know what you are saying here, I played Acorn has an secondary character since Founders because my secondary in GW2 was Torchwood, and I love Acorn and Oak.

Since TTK changes and other things Acorn and Oak with the right upgrades (the Regen ones and Harden) transforms them into Gods, to fight a good Acorn/Oak player and actually win is almost impossible.

Oak is pretty underrated too, his Wood Grief gun don't have a Hurtbox (I don't know why, since Corn have lol, and Z Mech don't have it too) so it enables people to camp using wall to hide and blast the enemy team without getting hit, and Sap Trap and Roll for Damage are close range options, made to win any matchup and hard close situations.

He is pretty much busted, I think if the Acorn/Oak player knows how to use them correctly, study maps and matchups, it's Almost uncounterable.

  • @SubzerotoAs a frequent Acorn main myself, I find the hardest counters to acorn are

    Super Brainz- Hyper Jump Thump
The suction is very deadly to Acorn, as it puts him at an easy range for your primary while lowering his heath a good chunk, usually enough to allow you to finish him off with Ultra Flying Fist. Of course be aware of him dashing, but if so he only leaves himself more open to your teammates, without the ability to escape.

Eningener - Bullhorn Swarm or Electric Slide - Primary Stun
As long as you have teammates with you, a stationary Acorn can be dealt with easily. In the current meta he is an insane run-and-gun style character, but he can't deal with groups of any significant number. The average Acorn will dash and sprint away when he encounters a group, but with a well timed stun you can allow for an easy kill for you and your teammates.

Honestly, a good Acorn barely dies. If you can snipe, then Deadbeard can 1-shot Acorns. Otherwise, I think the All-Star and 80s Hero like many mentioned are strong counters. You have high damage and high hp. As an engineer, if you can stun an Acorn, you can win but otherwise it's hard to kill an incredibly skilled Acorn player who jumps around.

This.  His health shouldn’t be so high outside of Oak, if we’re using body size/mass to determine health; he’s not larger than Imp?

I’m also a firm believer in trying to balance counterparts of each faction.  In this instance, if Oak/Acorn have a Hardened upgrade, the same should be available for Space Cadet/Station,

Disclaimer: I’ve wanted to main Oak since Picnic so in no way do I want him nerfed... just seems the Acorn is one of the more powerful characters in the game now.
