Justin and Shaun from PopCap knows this is a favorite request and they said they need to rebuild the boss to make it playable character since it wasn't designed for this purpose.
Just to set expectation right: They don't have a plan at this moment and not sure if they ever will.
I've suggested it before as well. Could be a neat game mode or to add some spice to the backyard battleground. Maybe the next game shall have something like it.
